Irish eyes are smiling

Stephen Ireland`s performance in Manchester City`s come-from-behind 2-1 victory over Tottenham Hotspur earned him a place in the team of the week in The Actim Index, the official player ratings system of the Barclays Premier League.

The 21-year-old, who scored City`s first goal at Eastlands, posted 33 points against the Carling Cup holders, just two off his best home score of the season, to move up 21 places to 89th in the Index with 259 points.

Ireland is proving his worth at the other end of the pitch as well making 14 interceptions so far this season, joint second equal with Dietmar Hamann, Nedum Onuoha, and Vedran Corluka. Only Richard Dunne has more - leading the way with 25 interceptions so far this season.

City have three players in the top 50 with Benjani in 11th place with 444 points and Martin Petrov (407) and Richard Dunne (341) in 16th and 42nd respectively.

Analysis of all Premiership games is taking place throughout the season and the players in the Actim Index Team of the Week are:

Name, Team, Position, Weekly Score

David James, Portsmouth, Goalkeeper, 35

Hermann Hreidarsson, Portsmouth, Defender, 48

John Terry, Chelsea, Defender, 47

Paulo Ferreira, Chelsea, Defender, 40

Ashley Cole, Chelsea, Defender, 37

Frank Lampard, Chelsea, Midfielder, 100

Joe Cole, Chelsea, Midfielder, 43

Stephen Ireland, Manchester City, Midfielder, 33

Cristiano Ronaldo, Manchester United, Midfielder, 32

Jermain Defoe, Portsmouth, Striker, 75

Salomon Kalou, Chelsea, Striker, 57

The Actim Index is calculated using a unique mathematical formula that rates each player`s contribution be it goals, shots, passes, dribbles, tackles, crosses, saves, clearances, blocks, interceptions, assists, clean sheets, time on the pitch or number of points gained by the team with marks deducted for red and yellow cards.

I don't how they managed to get him into the Index because for me, apart from scoring the goal, had a dreadful game with almost every pass he made went to the opposition

Totally agree, I think himself and his famous pink wheeled 4x4 will definitely up the road this summer. Sunderland, I reckon.

Do you think this is the best that Stevie Ireland has to offer? or do you think he will get better but not with City. We have a lot of lightweight players. JB suggested a good choice of midfielders who would add some punch to our side. I think one thing that SGE has learnt is that who ever you buy he must be quick.

Surprised the linesman wasn't in there for 2 iffy decisions?

storagematt ...They usually are, that is the first time this season we have had a decision our way...only about ten more to go before, as they say, everything evens itself out over the season.

Absolutely alphie. Anyone remember Chimbonda's Hand Goal at The Lane?

have to take issue with the City goal, there was not clear daylight between Ireland and the defender and yes when they froze the picture his leg was offside, seen worse this season. Still cant work out what is and what isnt Offside, still think we were robbed at Blackburn. Still waiting for a pen.

I dont agree with the slating of ireland, this guy is potentially a great player. hes scored 4 goals in 6 games for Ireland, scores some beautiful goals and although he is lightweight he appears to be an untelligent player (maybe not so intelligent in his private life). If you consider the ages of the likes of onouha, richards, hart, fernandes, ireland, corluka, johnson, sturridge it is an amazing achievement to be in the hunt for a top 6 place ! When we played spurs we had 3 players under the age of 22 in midfield a 19 year old keeper and 2 defenders in onouha and corluka under the age of 22. Name another side who have managed to play so many young players and be positioned where we are now. On top of that our academy is in yet another youth cup final and having the likes of elano, hamann, petrov the youngstrers can only learn and advance further. I think Ireland could be a very very good player. I do agree that we need a right sided Petrov and a torres type up top to bang in 20 goals plus a season as well as a young hamann and maybe a strong left back like Chiellini who can also play at cb and is also only 21 years old but overall everything is bright. The future is blue !!! Id like to see Modric (rm) Chiellini (lb) Milito/Asamoah (cf) and maybe Gilberto Silva/Gattuso (cdm) - [i wish]. Maybe we should get Walcott for (rm) if Modric wont come but im hoping because of Corlukas croatian links modric will come.
