Manchester City Fan Needs Your Support

Carl Tilson, a 21-year-old Blues supporter has teamed up with Vital Manchester City to send fans the following message.

Carl and Vital MC came up with the idea of lobbying Manchester City FC by creating an online petition in an attempt to see if it would be possible to do a charity football match, and give some much needed support to a terminally ill fellow City fan and charity ambassador for 'Action Duchenne'.

There was an article doing the internet rounds about an ex-Milan football player suffering from ALS (Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis). He managed to organise a game between Milan and Fiorentina, with the intention of raising the ASL foundation profile. The story Borgonovo had to tell captured the attention of the football world, with Italy's Gianluigi Buffon and Fabio Cannavaro taking notice.

Message from the Vital City team

'I will like to call on all Manchester City fans for support. A fellow City fan, who suffers from a rapid muscle wasting disease is currently continuing a never ending fight for survival.'

'Carl Tilson - a 21-year-old man, who comes from Manchester constantly battles for his life. I know he tries to keep smiling and does his best to keep the so-called British stiff upper-lip, even throughout all of his difficulties.'

What Is Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy?

Duchenne Muscular dystrophy is the most severe form of muscular dystrophy and it affects mainly the male population; it's a rapid muscle wasting disease, progressive deterioration of muscle throughout the body with a life expectancy of 18 - 20 years.

Boys are in wheelchairs by age 10 and eventually die by respiratory problems and heart failure.

At this time there is no known cure for this relentless condition, and the only treatment available is the use of a ventilator, medication for the heart and steroids (which can come with bad side effects).

Duchenne Muscular dystrophy was first discovered in the 1860's and was named after the French neurologist Guillaume Benjamin Amand Duchenne (1806-1875).

Duchenne was identified clinically over 100 years ago but the structure of the gene that is responsible for Duchenne was only discovered in 1987 by Luis Kunkel, Tony Monaco, Kay Davies, Eric Hoffman and others.

Researchers and scientists have been experimenting for years in the hope of trying to find a cure/treatment.

They are slowly making progress and there are treatments in the pipeline, nevertheless, in an attempt to save this generation of young people we need to raise the awareness urgently, and carry on the funding!

Many others on this planet we call earth suffer from the same or similar life threatening disease's. Obviously, we cannot help everyone, but we do have the chance to help one of our own fellow City fans.

In fact, in his granddad played for Manchester City and England in the 1930's - a legend I may add. Mr Tilson senior came to fame during the 1934 FA Cup Final by helping City win the Cup, scoring two against Portsmouth.

Vital City is doing this voluntary and without any real personal reason. I met Carl on the Manchester City forum Vital Manchester City and find it an honour to support such a worthy cause.

A lifelong Blues fan asks Manchester City FC to show their support for a City fan in need. With enough support and effort, we as a group hope it will make a difference.

I believe with enough signatures we might get Carl, and the charity his passionately believes in moving forward.
