'If It's Football, It's Vital'

City Will Run Rings Round AC Omonia

AC Omonia based in the Cypriot capital Nicosia is one of the leading and best supported football teams in Cyprus, however Manchester City need not worry.

The Blues face AC Omonia on Thursday September 18 in the UEFA Cup, second round first leg. The game is being screened live in the UK at 6pm BST on Sky's entertainment channel, Sky1.

Cypriot Football

The standard of Cypriot football could be described as average to poor and is on par with the Scottish Premier League when, on average, two teams battle it out for the leagues top spot, Omonia Nicosia and Apoel Nicosia.

Neo GPS Stadium

AC Omonia ground share with their rivals Apoel and Olympiakos Nicosia at their countries biggest ground, Neo GSP Stadium.

The ground's capacity, 22,859 rarely sees huge crowds even though the national team play their home games there.

AC Omonia

Omonia's fans are considered to be left wing in their majority. Today they are estimated to be around 42% of the Cypriot people.

Unlike the other teams of Cyprus, Omonia is so popular that today they have a lot of supporters from all the cities, towns and places in Cyprus, especially in Limassol, where they are estimated as the third most supported team after the other town's teams Apollon and AEL FC.

City Fans

Manchester City fans travelling to the game will have a wail of a time. One of the local beers, Keo is always served ice-cold and is cheap. The local food is of good quality and again, cheap. Try out a Meze, although I would suggest going for the half portion rather than the full 12 dishes. The Meza can be of fish or meat and will stuff the hungriest person.

Conditions

Summer officially ends in the middle of October, so fans need to consider the heat. The game kicks off at 8pm local time; nevertheless, fans can expect temperatures in the region of 28 degrees.

With Nicosia being inland, daytime temperatures, even in the middle of September will peak at around the 34-36 degree mark.

Driving In Cyprus.

They might drive on the same side as the Brits; however, the average Cypriot driver has trouble deciding which is left and which is right. Caution, don't trust 'em as the following video will show.

Cypriot Football Fans

The Cypriots love the Premier League and English TV in general, with satellite dishes in the region of 2.8 and 3.2 meters in diameter, visible just about everywhere. Yes, unauthorised Sky receivers and viewing cards have made their way to the furthest part of the Mediterranean, especially as there is a huge ex-pat and British forces living in the country.

Cyprus is a beautiful island and the people are great. I would urge caution about over-confidence, though. City are the best in the world at snatching defeat from the jaws of victory. To be honest I have to keep pinching myself already because we're still in the UEFA Cup.

Unfortunately, I booked our holiday prior to the UEFA Cup draw and miss the game by a whole day. If any City fans are still in Cyprus the following night (Friday 19th) and just happen to be in Limassol, i'll be in Woody's bar (seafront). They have several huges TV screens inside and out and show various footy matches. The beer is resonably priced baring in mind its in the middle of the tourist area and their English breakfasts are second to none. Hope to see one or two of you there.

I'd be happy if we come away with a draw.

It will be tough be you'd like to think we have the quality to progress. Alphie - think you may be right, but would much prefer a couple of away goals to settle the nerves. Come on City!
