Magnificent Seven Pre Match Interview: Portsmouth

Magnificent Seven Pre Match Interview: Portsmouth

Vital Pompey editor: pompeyrug

1. So, four games into a new Premier League season and following a difficult two opening games, Pompey seem to be getting it together. Is that the case?

Yep I reckon mate, and to be honest as much as you should never write off games I kept saying that the next 4-5 games after Chelski and Manyoo would give us a better indication of what sort of a season we are in for - and so far is 2 for 2, or 3 for 3 including the uefa cup...

2. How did you rate Pompey's transfer dealings this past summer?

To be honest after all the 'talk' from Peter Storrie I think I was a little disheartened for a brief moment at who had come in, but when you take stock and look at who has arrived and who has left its not really that bad as the quality arriving on the whole has made us a better outfit for me. People like Djimi Traore and Richard Duffy, who is a waste of space, should have gone and then we could have kept Pedro Mendes - who some of you former players know very well...

3. Next stop Manchester City. Smell the fear or relax with a beer?

Smell the fear, but I will relax with a beer anyway... we do not often do well at Citeh, but I do not 'smell the fear' due to thinking you are better than us, I fear us going to your place for the reasons we do not often do well on your patch - but we will this time...

4. Who of Manchester City's (currently) relatively small squad would you love to see in a Pompey shirt and who would you like to send us in a part ex?

I like the keeper Joe Hart, but we have the best one in England anyway so I will say Shaun Wright-Phillips as I really thought we would get him. I had the same feeling about him as I had Jermain Defoe and Peter Crouch, who we managed to get after chasing them for so long, as I suspected we would. As said Richard Duffy is a waste of space, please take him - I would even throw in Djimi if that was a clincher!

5. YOU are the new Premier League Chief Executive. You have been granted three measures / ideas which will go unopposed by all 20 clubs to improve the top flight game in England. Choose them wisely....

1 - Make football more affordable again! Plenty that 'should' go cannot go anymore as they are priced out.

2 - Share the wealth more evenly throughout football! And I do not just mean within the premier league, as there is life outside of this, as both of our clubs know all too well. We need to stop the rich from getting richer and the poorer from getting poorer. If this meant putting 'salary caps' on players wages and/or maximum transfer fees so be it!

3 - Clearly TV does a lot for the game but I would want this to stop being the factor that dictates football. Times and dates of kick-offs should revolve around what clubs want and not what TV wants.

6. We're a good few months on from 'Benjanigate' and that crazy January night. Rumours abound in Manchester that Benjani, currently injured, isn't racing to get back because his heart just isn't in it. He's dropped way down the striker selection order at City now. Would you take Benji back?

It would not surprise me as lets be honest his heart was never in the move anyway was it! He missed flights as he fell asleep - what sort of bull is that... We hated the way he was 'forced out' when he clearly did not want to go and hated the deal we agreed with you as well, a deal which I suspect will mean us never seeing a penny more than we already have, which I doubt is not much anyway.

I love Benji, and would welcome him back but I could not see him getting much of a look in now to be honest. He would be behind Defoe, Crouch and probably Kanu so as he would not play for free even his wages could be a sticking block in our current position!

7. Go on then. Sunday's result?

I always think - but do not expect - Pompey will win, and to be honest I mostly believe it when I say it so when I say I think we will go to Citeh and win on Sunday I reckon we will. 'If' we play like we have against Everton, Boro and Vitoria recently we will win I have no doubt about it... I went last season, had planned to return this season as your fans were fantastic towards us - making a weekend of it - but European tours and so on mean this is a no no now.

1. So, four games into a new Premier League season and following a difficult two opening games, Pompey seem to be getting it together. Is that the case?

First 2 games don't count, anything off of those 2 is a bonus, in fact we get sod all off of Everton normally, so bonus there as well, but 6 points out of 12 and the 2 best teams in the country out the way, yeah, we'll take that.

2. How did you rate Pompey's transfer dealings this past summer?

Crouch will get it together soon, Kaboul is all prospect at the moment, but if he can't fulfil his potential with Sol and Distin to guide him then he will never make it. Traore is another with all the ingredients to be great, and the new Algerian bloke looks like he could be a real crowd pleaser. Only down side was losing Munters and Mendes and keeping some deadwood instead.

3. Next stop Manchester City. Smell the fear or relax with a beer?

No fear from us! City maybe billionaires now but Hughes hasn't really had the chance to spend it yet!

4. Who of Manchester City's (currently) relatively small squad would you love to see in a Pompey shirt and who would you like to send us in a part ex?

Petrov, I love a proper winger and he is one of the best in the Premiership, you can have Djimi Traore, no-one else wants him!

5. YOU are the new Premier League Chief Executive. You have been granted three measures / ideas which will go unopposed by all 20 clubs to improve the top flight game in England. Choose them wisely....

At least 7 home country players have to start the match, I count British players rather than solely English as to be frank half the Irish and Welsh squads are English anyway!

A Transfer cap, City fans wouldn't like it with their untold wealth, but if there was a cap of say 30m a season, it would become a more level playing field with managers having to balance the sides rather than the likes of Chelsea signing all the prospects and then dumping them on the bench so no other bugger can have them.

Salary cap. Same as above really, no point having one without the other if you can pay a bloke £100,000 a week when most others can only muster £20,000 then its not a level field again.

6. We're a good few months on from 'Benjanigate' and that crazy January night. Rumours abound in Manchester that Benjani, currently injured, isn't racing to get back because his heart just isn't in it. He's dropped way down the striker selection order at City now. Would you take Benji back?

Show me a Pompey fan who didn't love Benji and I'll show you a liar.

7. Go on then. Sunday's result?

I'd take a draw but honestly think we can pinch it 3-2!

Everybody is saying this match is going to be special. Aren't the interviews with the Pompey Bells a refreshing change from the scornful atrtitude shown by Chelsea fans recently on Vital? I think this game will be a credit to the Premiership from two great football clubs! And no rugby tackles!

it's a football game between two fast up and coming teams - it should be a good, free flowing game - and if it is, we'll likely win. if not, you could pinch it.

In all honesty, our most important signing of the summer was keeping Diarra. He's the one you guys need be worried about today. He has bossed the midfield for the last 2 games. Well, lets hope it's a good one!

Pompey4me - It'll be an interesting tussle between Diarra and Kompany, both outstanding midfield generals. Quite capable of going either way, but hopefully we'll nick it! Come on City!

I'll listen out for that one mate. Got to listen on the radio:( Kompany you say, not heard of him, but I'll keep an eye out now. I've gone for a 1-1 draw, I think it's going to be a tight, but hopefully entertaining one.

Should definately be an entertaining one mate. Yes keep an eye out for Kompany. I think the Premiership will be getting used to his name from now on!
