'If It's Football, It's Vital'

Sparky Urges City To Get Stuck Into FC Twente

Google language translator

Manchester City boss Mark Hughes has urged his players to get stuck into Thursday nights UEFA Cup opposition, FC Twente.

Following on from a less than impressive Premier League start, Welshman Hughes is determined to counterbalance the abundance of flair within his team into a side that can also compete with the more physical teams.

Hughes told the media...

'You have to understand the type of players we've got. We've got attack-minded players and technically-gifted players. Irrespective of attitude, if teams are more physical, it's difficult to stamp your mark on the game. What you have to do is get the ball down and not get sucked into the game the opposition want to play.'

'You could say we're more suited to European football, it's a different test. FC Twente play a slow game and what we have to do is play at a Premiership tempo, the one they are accustomed to now on a week-to-week basis.'

'You have to be strong. you have to have the ability to withstand challenges, you have to break off tackles and exploit situations where defenders over-commit and that's a skill in itself where you draw fouls, you draw tackles and exploit the spaces that creates.'

'Sometimes you will have that but it's the Premier League and certain games won't be technical, they will be a battle and we have to be ready for that.'

And what about the Brazilians?

'I think they know now,' added Sparky. 'The more games the Brazilians play, the more they understand it. We're a young side in years and in experience. Even Robinho, who has great experience, is not experienced in the Premier League. It's different to any other league in the world but we'll get there.'

oh yeah based on the last two games, we need to take it up a notch and go out on the offensive.

This is a full admisssion by Hughes that the Man City squad consists of many technically great players -- but is lightweight in terms of the physical requirements of the Premiership. That's why we are losing so many Premiership games. Our poor Prem form is definitely not down to the manager... Perish the thought. This also explains why our two best players this season, SWP and Stevie Ireland do so well, because with builds like pipe-cleaners and respectively 5' 5" and 5' 8" tall -- they are best equipped to take the knocks and dish them out . That's probably why we'll buy "Tich" Diarra too.
