Cook Starts To Lead From The Front

Cook Starts To Lead From The Front

City Executive Chairman Garry Cook appears to be coming out fighting and has gone into more detail about the way 'Kakagate' was manipulated...

In a further welcome upturn in the frequency of his statements, he has revealed more about the events and complexities involved in Milan this past week in an interview with City's official website.

From the outset, many of us warned what Silvio Berlusconi was capable of and it's increasingly clear that the Italian master of spin well and truly stitched City up.

It could be that Cook is learning fast...

'We're extremely proud of the fact that we actually had a seat at the table to discuss bringing Kaka to this football club.

'There are many clubs that would love to be in our position and there are only a few clubs that can bring that type of talent to their football club because it's very complex. It's simply not a footballer, it's simply buying a business.

'You have to go through many more stages than you do just offering the football club the money to buy him and then sit down to discuss his personal terms.

'The numbers that are quoted for the transfer fee for a footballer is only one part of it. There are many ways to finance that.

'The second stage is what commercial terms are capable? The player in this context has seven different sponsors and those sponsors have a prerequisite and a clause in the agreement regarding where he plays football. So you have to work through seven times that.

'Then you get to his personal terms and those terms are related to some of the bonuses that he's been receiving and so on. So those three stages are complex in their own right which requires legal counsel, financial counsel and the counsel from the executives of the football club.

'The irony of it is that in some cases you could call up a football club, find out if the player is for sale, meet with the player's agent, put an offer in and get it completed. That could be done in 24 hours, but when you are talking the levels of Kaka and some of the others at that level, it doesn't work like that.

'I think what has disappointed us is that the circus that took place around this was created by AC Milan. Again, they bottled it. They wanted to do it [the deal], they were ready to do it, there was political pressure they were under, not only from the ownership, but also the media pressure. We felt it, you could see it, you could smell it and they were scared.

'It has allowed people to speculate and interpret, which actually negatively impacted our Club, the owners and the people who work very hard at this Club to achieve the greater good here.'

lincolnblue..Secrecy relies on both parties and if one party blabs about it then there is nothing you can do except walk away. JB...I don't think it was any great secret that City were in Milan it just so happened that 'arry was there at the same time.

Cook would do well to remember that both Hughes and Bowen went public about the transfer nearly being completed.

It's stunning to think that all the hysterical shrieking and pontificating that took place in England this past week over Kaka was in reaction to financial announcements made by Berlusconi. City didn't even get to make an offer. You couldn't make it up etc...

All Mr Hughes ever said was that it was on going. If you get the nod that Club has agreed a fee with the player, you would naturally think that a deal may well be close, but not as amateur as SLF above would have us think when you actually read the progress made.I think we were naive into thinking that Milan was as honourable as ourselves.

I doubt there'll ever be business done between City and Milan again.
