Do City Need An Experienced Keeper?

Google language translator

City has been heavily linked with several goalkeepers in recent weeks but the question is, do we really need another keeper?

With Joe Hart and Kasper Schmeichel coming through and showing their vast potential, would it benefit City to sign another goalkeeper while sending Joe and Kasper down the pecking order?

Some people would argue that we definitely need a new shot-stopper, perhaps in an effort to pass on their experience to our young goalies, but surely experience comes from playing matches, and signing another goalkeeper would heavily decrease Hart's playtime and possibly shut the door on Schmeichel's future City career.

Although there are always two sides to a story, and many others believe that for a young keeper to really show their potential they need an already experienced keeper to act as a mentor and nurture their talent.

If Manchester City is to sign another keeper (though they will have to look fast as time is running out, what with Kinnear keen to hold on to his star man Shay Given, and other City target Carlo Cudicini signing for Tottenham earlier today, plus a supposed big money bid being rejected for Iker Casillias), there isn't too much to choose from.

So who should Manchester City approach? Maybe an increased bid for Given would make Kinnear re-think his decision, or perhaps a record bid for Italian shot-stopper Buffon might do the trick.

Who know, but with only seven days left until the transfer window closes; Mark Hughes and his team had better get their skates on.

Many thanks go out to 'warmouths' for submitting this article.

we definately need another one as kasper wants to move to secure first team football. It's a shame cudicini went to tottenham as I feel he is good enough to battle hart for no.1 spot but not good enough to push hart onto the bench permenantly - which is what I expect would happen with given.

I don't think signing a goalkeeper should be our top priority in this window. We seem to have got the players in to shore up our defense which in turn should put less pressure on the 'keeper thereby giving him better confidence. Maybe in the summer bring in an older 'keeper for a couple of years one who will not be to fussed about sitting on the bench.

If all the hype and the rumours are true, then nothing can be done about Given until Thursday, the day after they play us. They're going to need him against the second most potent striking force in the league.

Ye if were going to get Given we should move quick so he can't play wednesday I think Kinnear knows he is going to sell him as he has just give Steve Harper their number 2 a new deal an they have been linked with a move for David james.

Def need an experienced keeper, Hart is a great young keeper and can only get better. But i think we could do ith a keeper that has a Presence.. i think this comes with time eg.Given,Cech,James,Freidel,Van d Sar etc. All the above are in their 30s and as a keeper i def think this experience shows. GO GET GIVEN BOYS

Yes, someone to provide competition for the shirt is vital. People worry about Jo Hart's development suffering if he doesn't play games; It will suffer even more if he becomes complacent in thinking he's automatic first choice. I would have preferred Cudicini, as he would have been a slightly shorter term solution, but Given is a very good keeper, and Jo Hart will have to work to retain his place. Ultimately I can see Hart keeping Given on the bench!

I think we should get a keeper, for me , though I like him a lot, Hart seems to have something missing and Alphie I think you have got it right that he has too much pressure on him at the moment with our not so solid defence . Given is good and I would get him whatever it takes. I would let Kasper go as I don't think he is quite good enough at the moment for the premier league but I'm sure that one day he will be, maybe we could loan him out for a season or two so he can get the first team football he craves maybe in the championship. The only problem I see is how do you rotate goalkeepers?

Heard from someone who works at the BUPA hospital in Whalley Range that Given had his medical there today. Expect the deal to be delayed so he can't play against the barcodes on Wednesday.

perfect signing for a keeper....still good enough to be a top prem keeper....but also proffessional enough to know that Hart needs games to improve his already excellent potential. Would be the best possible mentor Hart could ever hope for.....

RH & Pottsy are both right in that to play Given in Wednesdays match would not go down well with the barcodes and you cannot write into a transfer that a player can or cannot play against his old team. If the medical thing is true, then I expect Shay Given to be registered just too late to play for the blues tonight. The difference bewteen Hart and Given is that Given will organise the defense better than Hart as he is a veteran keeper, Hart will learn from this, but I hope that Hart does not throw his teddy out of the cot if Given does sign, but make him more determined. If City are going to purchase players they will want the best in every position and Hart will grow with this experience of having a much senior goalkeeper in the team.

All competition is healthy, and to challenge the big four you have to have world class in every position, the goalkeeping position is just as important. If Hart does through his toys then he can join the rest of them on the transfer list at the end of the season, I only want players fully commited to the cause like Danny Mills.....(joke)

It has been said that neither City or Newcastle want to negotiate a deal for Given before Wednesdays game but it does look likely that we will sign him, im really lookin forward to 2nd february hopefully City will make a shock signing again and at least this time the window closes at 17.00GMT so i dont have to stay up refreshing skysports till 12.00.
