'If It's Football, It's Vital'

Media's Role Concerning Manchester City

Vital Manchester City regular, mcfcirish sent us his opinion regarding the media's stance on City.

Speaking as a lifelong Manchester City fan, I like many other Blues have had to put up with an awful lot of stick, especially as I live in Ireland.

Similar to many countries around the globe, we Blues in Ireland have to suffer the constant humiliating taunts from so-called United supporters but hey, I can live with that. It's the norm isn't it? However, what really rattles my cage is the role the media have in today's society.

Un-biased View

Now, as far as I know, the media / broadcasters are supposed to report on stories and events with an un-biased view. The footballing world is well aware that our beloved City has become the richest club in the world, (if you didn't you obviously haven't been watching a certain sports news channel, reading various newspapers, or perhaps you're just not this planet).

I have no problem with constructive criticism nevertheless; some of the 'views' that have been expressed towards the Eastlands club of late have in all honesty, been shocking.

What bugs me?

The hacks write headlines the likes of, 'we have destroyed football' we 'put prices on the value of players' we are 'trying to re-write the history we never had' - the list goes on.

What really bugs me is that such projects as 'City in the Community', which of course is of great use combining both education and football to help those who are less fortunate is hardly ever reported.

Diversity

We also received very little media coverage in 2003 when we became the first club to openly support a 'gay policy' and that accepting supporters and players of all sexual orientation are welcome. Topics such as; 'Race and Diversity' filling the back pages, well there is enough material there to just about fill the back of a stamp.

Summing up

We all have our views and of course, we all support the club that we love. We just ask that peoples agendas (if and when they exist) are left out of the fold and let us all enjoy football the way it's meant to be.

Many thanks go out to mcfcirish.

i think you are spot on mate and the hatred aimed at city is nothing short of evil. if this money had come to manyoo then the press wouldnt bat an eyelid as they would be to scared to take on bacon face himself so i think we have to ban ALL press from city and let them make stories up like they are doing now anyway. Nice one mcfcirish I would like to see the newspaper association put a code of conduct into practice where you can write anything you want to as long as you can PROVE what you print is TRUE

Maybe your right BM in banning the press but i think the best way is for the team to keep winning and make them eat there own words.

An excellent Article McIrish and until we actually get to the heights of United this will continue to be the case. Like it or not, there are an awful lot of Rags supporters out there world wide, who want to read about their team. The papers are in the business of selling papers, thats why people in far away places like Brazil and such know more about United than City. The Sports Editors are frightened of Taggart, in case they put something in the paper he disagrees with in case he bans them from the ground and that would affect paper sales. The recent case of Ronaldo kicking an opponent and getting away with it, nothing by the papers compared with the headlinbes they gave SWP. We need to start putting silverware back in the trophy cabinet before the media will take us seriously. I cannot see us doing that this season, but I can see a marked improvement in the team, we have more quality than we have had for a long time.

forgot to add, my own local paper the daily post reports on Liverpool Everton and United, here in Wales, but hardly a mention about City. Thats not about to change soon either. I have been used to it for many years but it still hurts, I will never get used to it.
