The UEFA Cup will be renamed the Europa League from season 2009/2010.
Details
The new-look league will have 48 clubs in 12 groups of four, with the top two in each joining the eight third-placed clubs from the Champions League in a 32-club knock-out stage.
A UEFA spokesperson said...
'The new format will result in many teams from all over Europe contesting the new UEFA Europa League, with teams from emerging countries or lesser known teams challenging the 'old' order of established European clubs.'
UK Broadcasting Rights
Channel Five, ITV 4 and Irish TV pay channel Setanta Sports have each been awarded the 2009-12 UEFA Europa League UK TV rights.

By my reckoning it will take 11 games to reach the final instead of the present 21. Unless they still have qualifying rounds that we were subject to.

• The group stage is expanded to include 12 groups of four teams each. Each team plays the other three sides on a home-and-away basis, with the top two teams in each of the 12 groups progressing to the Round of 32.
• The titleholders and ten clubs eliminated from the UEFA Champions League play-off round qualify automatically for the group stage.

Still don't think anyone will take it too seriously until they end the practice of allowing teams knocked out of the Chumps League to drop into the Europa League. Also don't think anyone but the real minnows will value the competition until it starts spinning even a fraction of the money the Chumps league can earn. Not saying I wouldn't mind winning it this year of course...
