PFA Award: Stephen Ireland v Ashley Young

From the comparison below from their latest games you can see the difference between the two players quite clearly.

Stephen Ireland has a much higher pass completion rate, as well as working all over the pitch to help his team.

The evidence in favour of Ireland is overwhelming and the fact that the Manchester City midfielder did not claim the coveted award only serves to diminish the credibility of the FA.

In addition to this, the fact that Rio Ferdinand was nominated ahead of Brede Hangeland and Ryan Giggs was nominated ahead of Frank Lampard makes the whole awards a farce.

The fact that 12 games and a solitary goal Giggs actually won the main award is beggars belief.

I think this article says it all - the FA and the rest of the PL are against City and our players. I would think SI would have walked it if the neutral fan had voted.

I was astounded that young won it, i personally thought it was between Ireland and Lennon.

Your quote that "the fact that the Manchester City midfielder did not claim the coveted award only serves to diminish the credibility of the FA" only goes to diminish YOUR credibility! The award is from the PFA - Professional Footballers Association - NOT the FA. It is voted for by professional footballers. I know City fans can be paranoid, but get real!

You only need to look at the full season stats. How many goals for SI how many for AY? How many assists, etc etc. No contest the votes are cast in Feb and that's stupid.

It may or may not demonstrate bias against MCFC: One thing it clearly does demonstrate is bias TOWARDS teams at the top of the premiership. Villa were flying high before January (when I believe the votes were cast) and were on course for a Champions League berth, so Young will have caught everyone's eye. Unfortunately for Steven Ireland (or anyone else playing for a lower placed team), the sheeple that are modern footballers are like simpletons drawn to shiny things (just like most rags fans!), so I guess that there was very little chance of him winning the award. If the voting had been later I suspect Young may not have even received a nomination, such has been Villa's freefall in the league. On another note, I do think that the only reason Giggs received the award was as a sympathy vote for a player who is more than likely heading for retirement in the summer. It certainly wasn't based on his contribution to United or the game in general!!!

as much as i think that Ireland deserved it,the stats above is non-sence. It is based on one game and more over asley young is a winger and hence crosses a lot more than Ireland,it is very rarely that crosses reach its desired target and hence will have more mis placed passes.

I thought it was between Young and Ireland, I'd have had no arguments either way but only one could win and they do look at more than just pass completions, they look at the impact on the team etc. Awards are always open to questionning I guess but I think Ash is every bit as deserving of the recognition as Ireland would have been. Both smashing players.

Yeah got to agree, the awards this season were a farce, how Giggs won is beyond me,it is the "player of the year",not the "you've had a great career" award.I would have put my house on Ireland winning young player, hopefully he'll get the recognition from the football writers.

Hope Giggs has the grace to realise he's been awarded the sentimental vote from fellow players. It's not a lifetime achievement award for *****s sake. (Which i wouldn't hold against him actually). JOKE.
