Barry In Talks With Manchester City

Manchester City are reported to be holding talks with Aston Villa captain Gareth Barry over a proposed move to Eastlands.

A spokesman for Aston Villa has stated: 'Aston Villa can confirm today that Gareth Barry is in talks with Manchester City.'

Villa's American owner Randy Lerner had hoped to persuade Barry to stay at the midlands club and confirmed last week that they were in discussions with Barry regarding an improved contract.

Although it is clear that Manchester City are highly ambitious, the news will come as a surprise to some who thought that Barry would be heading to Liverpool in pursuit of Champions League football.

If this is still the case, the news of Barry signing will no doubt be a reflection of City's top four ambitions next season.

I give this move a 8.5/10 if it goes through. :yup: He's a quality mid that can lead the midfield in the manner that we've been lacking at times. He'll rub off well on Stevie and give Johnno someone to look up to and learn from, and in both of those respects I can say that's a good thing because neither are the finished article and can definitely learn a thing or two about the box-to-box role.

I completely agree with you Sev. I hope Johno is back soon, he would be an awesome midfielder after training with Barry.

ive just been on the vital aston villa forum and boy are thy not happy,i se this as an excellent sign as if he was as rubbish as they are claiming why are they foaming so badly about it!!

Quality player and just what we need in midfield. He hasnt signed yet, but im hopeful. I reckon he will be the first of 7 players coming in - 10 players leaving.

We have a very strong midfield already, comparitively. Going forward, with SWP, Ireland, Petrov, Elano, Robinho it doesn't get any better. But I think we have needed someone "in charge" in the middle of the park. I was hoping we'd go for De Rossi, but Barry is probably the nearest thing to the Roma General who's English and Premiership-experienced. he would definitley strengthen the whole team, if we get him. But with, Joihnson, De Jong and Kompany already in the squad I think we may lose two of our midfielders this Summer. I'd say Elano, who just doesn't gel with Hughes whatever -- and the unthinkable... Could Johnson be on his way? Or Petrov? Even so I would say "Get Barry" -- City would be a far better team with him, possibly as our captain. I have my fingers crossed.

with us going for Barry, its not just villa fans not happy, the liverpoo fans have brought ''city ruinin football'' tripe out again...sounds like sour grapes to me IF we do pull it off.

A natural left footer, can also play left FB. and is as we suspect that Elano maybe on his way, this one presses all the button as he also takes a good penalty as the Villa fans will vouch for. I hope Hughes and Co can get Barry to sign.

If yous dont qualify for CL next season it will be interesting to see how he behaves. He's a very talented player but at times over the last year he has shown a total lack of class.I dont begrudge your club, and yous have prevented Liverpool from walking all over us,one of the positives from a Villa fans perspective is knowing that this will get up mr Benitez' nose.

That is a massive signing. The Big Four have been blown out of the water on this one.

"the big four have been blown out of the water on this one ? LOL.....isnt that the sort of statement you make if you sign kaka, messi, ribery etc etc....i thought you just signed gareth barry for 12mil while he only has 12months left on a contract?
lillywhites101
Interesting to see where he plays next season, you're not exactly shy of midfielders at the moment.
CoxintheBox
A good player and he would be more than welcome.
