Ireland Looks To Ireland

There'll be hopes raised across the Emerald Isle right now as City midfield maestro and defence unlocker Stephen 'Superman' Ireland considers an international return...

If Stevie does decide to don the famous green shirt again as he continues his second consecutive punishing kung fu karate summer fitness regime in and around Glossop, the timing would be perfect.

Eire have three more World Cup qualifying games remaining and are second in their group behind Italy who they will face at Croke Park in October.

Ireland revealed to the Irish media this week:

'I will be thinking about it over the summer. I spoke to Giovanni Trapattoni three weeks ago so we are going to meet up soon and see how it goes, but yeah, I'm going to have a long, hard think about it. We'll see. I've had a good think about it already so we'll see what happens when I meet up with Trapattoni.'

Sounds like he could be about to change his mind, which would be great for him to get some World Cup experience.

Indeed, alphie. Be brilliant to see a load of Blues at the World Cup!

Whatever Stevie decides -- to play for Ireland or not -- will sit well with me. The guy has progressed in leaps and bounds over the last year and he is setting the highest standards in everything he does. But let's not forget, Stevie is still very young and unlike many young men has strong family commitments. I respect him for those. He's not the type who courts the nightclubs -- or the seedy hangers on of football. I suspect he may be the type who knows exactly what he wants and finds it with his family. He's a young man to admire. If he wants to play internationals he'll do it, but if he has other priorities then I'm more than ready to suppoprt him in that choice too.

i am very pleased he is at least considering it, very mature way to do things, huge respect for the guy,, as previously said, has come along way in such short space of time. whatever you decide superman, i hope it is yours and your family's decision. you would light up the world cup for Ireland. oh and to be honest, no dig intended. would be nice to see the Irish in another world cup finals. Superman is the Star

I hope he does decide to play for Ireland ....I think the international exposure would help round him out ...give him that extra edge he cannot achieve at club level.
Doody
I'd rather he didn't... how will he be able to do his kung fu training in a world cup year!
