Eto'o No Go But Jo May Go?

Barçelona's revelation that City are after Samuel Eto'o has become something of a moralising pontificators dream but meantime, the City clear out looms large...

From what we can make out at this stage, Eto'o's relationship with Barçelona, which has always been bordering on love-hate is entrenched in some sort of bizarre Catalunyan mix of bluff and counter bluff.

His agent's press conference this morning revealed that Barça have now offered the mercurial striker a new two year contract which goes against signals the Catalan giants had previously given him that he should leave. And so the dance continues as Eto'o's adviser went on to add that the player would be 'delighted' to get off the 237 bus on Ashton New Road.

All a bit weird a la Kakagate and City fans who were previously unaccustomed (not unlike our club's hierarchy) to this nonsensical continental brinkmanship prior to January would do well to shrug it off and not even contemplate trying to make sense of it.

MCFC have to date declined to comment, confirm or deny anything. That may well be the best policy for the moment as the hacks and certain rival fans begin to foam over City ruining football again amid all the shocking financial hearsay rumours that go along with the Eto'o story. Should City choose to walk away, I can't think of many Blues who would complain or lose much sleep over it.

Meanwhile, City's squad rebuilding continues and the hapless Jo could be stumbling around at Goodison Park permanently before too long according to various reports. Everton are keen to bring the Brazilian in but to what cost? All eyes on Joleon Lescott for some guidance...

All this and much more to come from Vital MC on the day that Carlos Tevez ends his rag prison sentence.

It seems to be as I suggested last week, that Eto'o is angling for more wages, and it doesn't matter much who he gets them from. Reputedly he's an intelligent lad, but sometimes the problem with intelligent lads is that they can tend to over-play the hand they have. He's trying to drag the whole world in right now, for the profile. He's going to have to play it very cool. IMO He'll stay if the dosh is in any way commensurate, but Barça may themselves be winding it up to get more transfer fee. For them, at least, this IS all about money.

Some words they're using, like 'stratospheric' are words that are in some way meant to flatter us, tell us we're VERY BIG. Wind us up. Are we going to chance going right above valuation.. and risk embarrassment again a la Kaka? Or will Kal and the boys wind it all down?

Top assessment, Roy! Maybe the Chairman will view the Eto'o signing as a luxury, ie if it doesn't come off, move on.

I agree, we need to be cautious not to cause another Kakagate with ludicrous sums bandied about again like a toddler mashing buttons on a calculator. I am sure Cook et al have wised up to the politics in football and will gracefully bow out of anything turning into a debacle this time around. Eto'o would be the marquee signing that would open the floodgates for the worlds best at Eastlands, but if we can capture the signing of Tevez, I believe he will have a similar effect regardless.

Quasimodo Tevez would certainly add some muscle to our forward line. Pair him with The Boj!

The one thing that sticks out for me, is that after all these years of being gone, the 237 service is still running - I loved that bus. (But not quite as much as the 219)

A personal favourite is the 236, wolf! Always delighted to see these numbers when I'm back in town!

"On the day Tevez ends his Rag Prison sentence"- made me chuckle Mr Baguette. I hear he is bound for Edgeley Park following the new new money revelation that County will reveal on Friday.

Eto'o (like Robinho) is a potential problem we don't need at this stage of our 'project'. If we finish 6th next season do we really think both of them will be happy with Europa football under the guise of it being progress? He clearly doesn't want to come, so lets walk away and issue a statement saying so! What we need are genuine grafters who join for the right reasons, like Barry and hopefully Tevez who are buying into the longer-term vision.

I am not sure the Boj will stay or get into the team if Eto'o changes his greedy mind, when the new offer from barca turns out not to be enough money.

You must have been hallucinating, klutch. Anybody else seen any sort of presumptive gun jumping articles orchestrated by Murdoch News that turned out to be fecking bollox?

BitterBlue: Hard to tell what Eto'o knows about us but his lawyer has said that City have not spoken to him yet (I assume officially). So not sure how enthusiastic he can be until we do. What is for sure is that we will have to pay him a lot of money. Barcelona have just thrown out the fact (in their ongoing public catfight with him) that they have paid him 40M over the last 5yrs. So, he is already on Robinho level pay with bonuses at Barcelona. Yes Eto'o is a difficult personality off the pitch at times (what top player isn't apart from Kaka) but he is also a winner, a hardworking professional and, a player our owner wants for strategic reasons and no doubt personal pleasure. I don't have a crystal ball but it wouldn't surprise me now to see him join City (on or before the 19th). Texting him a 2yr extension at 11:30pm can't be taken too seriously, surely? His lawyer calling the President and directors of FCB liars this morning, not exactly the best tactic if he's really planning on remaining there. Don't lose faith yet. I am sure it wasn't the signing of RSC that has Torres on alert naming us seriously as title rivals (big turn around from his petty insults 10 mths ago).

I'm willing to bet that Jo (if he does in fact come on loan to Goodison) will outscore both Tevez and Santa Cruz next season. You've just spent 18million on a striker who scored half as many goals as one of our defenders (Lescott) and Tevez is hardly prolific either. 'Hapless' Jo scored 5 goals in 11 appearances for Everton. I reckon he could get 15 easily in a full season ;) look forward to seeing the lad in royal blue again.

Toffetower: I hope Jo plays well for you. He is obv a confidence player and just needs a run of games that we cannot give him. He may well score more, I am not sure. I think Tevez will do ok as he has the added motivation of sticking it to red nose. Though, I am hoping we add another as a cherry on the cake. Dare I ask what you think of Joleon Lescott as a defender? Can he bring the ball out of defence?

I think that's one of his strengths, he is comfortable on the ball and is overall a very steady defender. His comfort in possession is underlined in his ability to play in the left full-back position too, he scored ten goals in that position two seasons ago. He really is an asset to our club, with what he gives going forward and in defence. I can't see him leaving, not for yourselves, no offence. There's no need to sell on our part as it would be a step backwards, we are looking to strengthen not weaken our side.

It's a shame about joao. Wrong time, wrong place and so on. I just wish Hughes could give him a chance, but with the likes of Tevez and Santa Cruz before him it would be difficult.
