Hughesy Comments On His Terry Bid

Mark Hughes has responded to media questions over his bid to sign Chelsea and England Captain John Terry. Any hour now surely we can expect Terry to make a statement...

As the City squad's boarding of the plane for South Africa nears, as does Chelsea's for the USA, speculation over the England Captain's as yet unresolved future continues to heighten:

'John Terry is an outstanding player and an outstanding person. If the opportunity presents itself to bring a player of his calibre to the club we will do our utmost to bring that about. Obviously we need conversations with Chelsea in that regard. We would like the opportunity to speak to John, but as yet that hasn't been forthcoming.

'We would like to think we could offer him a different challenge. From my own experience, when you have been with a club a long time, you maybe get to a point when you need a new challenge, when you think a change of scenery would just reignite certain things within you.

Hughes considered the continued silence from the player...

'It is not a question of money, it is about a different challenge, a different stage in his life and career, and maybe that is why there hasn't been a response because John is seriously thinking in those terms. I went through that process myself and I can understand if that is the way he is thinking. I think players understand what we are trying to do here and it is very exciting.

'The fact that we have brought Carlos Tevez - one of the best strikers in the world - here helps our case. I'm sure his signing (Tevez) will help us bring further top-class players to the club.'

ADEBAYOR LATEST:

There are rumours knocking around town this morning that Arsenal's Emmanuel Adebayor completed a medical for City last night and that The Bluese are now waiting for a work permit to be issued before announcing his arrival.

Tbh this is getting a little bit near the mark ...I wonder if Chelsea will respond with an illegal approach charge. By sayign Terry needs a new challenge is a bit out of order. Up till now it had been simpel club approach club..but this is actually a message to the player.....does it count as tapping up...(if that even exisits anymore)

Who honestly knows, Embers? Alledgedly murky waters surround a lot of top flight deals. SWP or Sturridge to Chelsea spring to mind. As fans, we can only point to the weird goings we witness or know of that surround particular deals but right now, I can't see any complaint from someone like Kenyon over answers at a press conference being treated seriously.
Johnny Baguette
To be fair to MH it was Chelsea that went public, probably as a PR exercise in anticipation of the deal coming off. Tapping up has been the sole right of the Top 4 for years, as have the highest wages and biggest transfer prices. JT clearly wants to talk to us but Chelsea are desperate to save face. What goes round comes round!
BitterBlue
The hacks are really going after that Chelsea "civil war" line. Now they're saying Kenyon will leave the club!
Johnny Baguette
Tbh Tapping up is not the exclusive right of the top 4....Sp*rs did it to get Hoddle from Southampton (or someone) way back...and tbjh every team does it..either by using the press to print lovely "interested" stories or by using players friends etc to talk to players. Tbh I just wish this whole sorry affair was over..its getting a bit pathetic. Terry has lost so much face at chelsea atm, fans are actually turning against him because he wont come out and say anything. This is a palyer who said he was chelsea through and through but now is making excuses to allow him to get a chance to leave (if what you read is correct). Tbh City should put in their 3rd bid of 40million and see....if chelsea want to sell they will tell Terry they want to and get the whole thing sorted...
Embers
Fair point on the tapping up. The whole "Mr Chelsea" tag does my head in though, I'd be Mr Chelsea for £100k+ a week. His loyalty quotes always seem to be around the time he signs a bigger contract to stay. I'm guessing for £200k a week he'll happily be "Mr City", at least until he's offered 300k to become "Mr Notts County".
BitterBlue
Chelsea's hierarchy must be conscious of the fact that Terry is their last remaining academy graduate in their starting XI. Surely they are going flat out to keep him and maintain that link with their grass roots fans?

What grassroots fans?

Good point fcb. From my time in London I know a lot of the Chelsea who stood on the same terraces as me in the late 80's don't go anymore.

Lisen to Former Chelsea striker Gianluca Vialli talking about this... he won't sign for you.
Matt_Us
Tapping up does not exist in my book... Surely the players of intelligence will be able to think for themselves and if talking makes the player weigh up his options, what’s so bad about that?
mcfcthriller
If the Terry deal doesn't come off, what then? You guys have done great improving attack, but made virtually no improvements to a very leaky defense. Now, Kompany is injured and Dunne is supposedly leaving. As you recall, scoring was not the problem last season. A 4-3 loss is still a loss! Just curious what else is in the works with you guys.
Samboney
Who knows Samboney, the world is our oyster.

Peter Kenyon has re-iterated this afternoon that he's not for sale at any price - so he'll be yours by Thursday night then :-)
merlin
Terry came out all smiles thgis afternoon wearing the new shirt, but it still takes Kenyon to stonewall for Terry. I am not as certain as you are Merlin and think he will still be at the bridge this coming season, but he will have strained relations by not coming out and making a committment to Chelsea.

Ding, dong, Lucio is off to Inter. You can have Carvalho... but then again he doesn't want to go to "sunny Manchester"....
