Last Season City Were 15 Goals From 5th Place
BlueWolfie sent us the following.
Much has been said (and continues to be said) about who is on the way to Manchester City, but with our current squad itching to go, it can be argued that we have quite possibly the strongest attack line ever seen in the Premiership.
Of course that accounts for nothing if City are literally leaking goals at the back as they did last season however, now that Hughes has turned his attention to the back-line (thankfully), a repeat of last season should be just a distant memory.
Which brings me to an interesting point.
Now you may or may not be aware but during season 2008/09 we missed out on gaining a point (or winning) by a solitary goal, no less than 15 times. One could argue that this is a mute point (pardon the pun), because all teams could look back at last season and say the same sort of thing, and blame it on tiredness, injuries, cup competitions, dubious off-sides, being crap, and so on.
But, with City building a team that has only one purpose, one can be forgiven for thinking that this time it will be a little different. Those games which involved a one goal deficit could have earned us valuable points, therefore they should be now few and far between. Of course, they will still happen, they always do.
But had we have scored just one more goal in those 15 games, we would have actually finished in 5th place (this is also accounting for points taken away from the sides above us) with 69 points. Just one goal in each game, and that was with last season's squad. Fast forward to the start of the 2009/10 campaign and with the potential squad we will have (and to an extent, already have), 5th place should be a walk in the park, should it not?
The strongest front line ever PLUS, a solid back line? Methinks the 'top four' should be worried. Very worried indeed!

going back over the last 17 years in the premierleague i can think of only world class partnerships, not a quartet of stars....for instance shearer/sheringham, yorke/cole (unfortunately) quinn/phillips etc etc.....might be getting ahead of my self here but this could be the most talented strikeforce in prem history

Gleeson, show me where it says that we will leave everyone in the dust? Show me where it says that we will win the league? What it does say is that for a little bit of extra effort last season we could have finished 5th. And now that there are far better players at the club, 5th is very easily obtainable, and the potential for a higher place is there for the taking. I thought that was obvious. You could have come on here and say that yes, you do have a better squad, but it won't be as easy as you think it might be (which I don't), and that my team will do all they can to make sure that City doesn't get higher than us (and then offer some sensible reasons as to why). But no. Like most fans you come here and just spout nonsense.

3 points off 7th, a win at home over fulham, would have reversed the order and the fans from the big four would have been sweating more than they are now and trying to convince themselves that we do not constitue a threat. It must be so Taggart has said so. So what are you doing here commenting on something that does not bother you. How many other premier team sites have you been on Gleeson to tell them they are not a threat either? I suspect none. Dont forget to take your capol before your dad reads you a bed time story.

I've been on plenty of sites, you think you are the only ones worth rising. Get over yourselves. BlueWolfie, yes you do have a better squad so 5th is obtainable, but I think you'll may struggle to do that this year because your now a target for other club, everybody is going to want to beat City and their stars. Tevez is a confusing one as well, he left Utd because he didn't feel loved and wasn't getting games - will be be first choice at City? He could become unsettled quickly. (see I can talk serious too, and i've seen you over at Chelsea spouting nonsense Wolfie, so tit for tat)

Well thank you for posting something decent Gleeson - as for being a target, well, okay, fair enough, but we'll just have to get used to it, if we are to climb up the table. And, yeah, I can't see Tevez being anything other than a first-choicer. Sure, we want a top four finish (who doesn't?), and I know it will be difficult. Most people would say that it is the Arse that are most under threat from us - which you'd probably agree with (and probably wouldn't mind either). But at the end of the day, Chelsea (and the other three) have everything to lose, and it is us that everything to gain. It is just a case of who is going to run faster; the hunter or the hunted?

Ok, in fairness you do have every reason to be optimistic, its exciting times for you lot and I don't blame you for getting a bit carried away. Worst that can happen? You have a season like last season but don't have the joy of Europe, best that can happen you nick fourth at the expense of the Gooners (personally, I would like to see that if i'm honest) One thing that baffles me is Wenger selling Adebayor to you lot, IMO, you're Arsenals biggest threat. Ha, speaking of Adebayor, i'm looking forward to going up there singing the Adebayor song in your back yard!!

Well at least we have common ground to knock the Gunners from the Top4 .... then it's all to play for. You are right by the way that we have every reason to be optimistic. I mean what kind of fans would we be if we were miserable and pessamistic after spending £200million plus. Yes money does not guarantee success, we all know that but nobody can deny that it shouldn't be a reason for optimism, apart from the green eyed ones. SEE YOU IN THE TOP 4.
