City Defeat European Champions Barcelona

Manchester City defeated the European Champions Barcelona to take home the Joan Gamper Trophy from the Nou Camp tonight after Martin Petrov's 28th minute goal.

City were playing in front of a massive crowd of 94,123 in a truely memorable win, City's first trophy of the season.

It is fair to say Barcelona dominated the game from start to finish, but after Petrov's goal, City held firm at the back with Shay Given producing moments of brilliance to deny the likes of new signing Ibrahimovic after he was introduced in the second-half.

Barcelona have won 13 of the last 14 Joan Gamper prestige matches making the victory a truely remarkable achievement, highlighting the power of Mark Hughes' new look City and continuing the run of clean-sheets.

The Manchester City faithful were in full voice and would have no-doubt enjoyed the festivities at the pre-game Barceloneta Beach Party.

The party will surely carry on well into the Spanish night.

There may have been 94,000 there. But the key one was Khaldoon al-Mubarak who saw City eat at the top table for the first time.

Shay Given, Richard Dunne, Tal Ben-Haim and Nedum Onuoha were awesome in defence. I'm not sure I've ever said that before.

eighthsin - I like the way that you report it as our first trophy of the season - that sounds like confidence to me! Ibrahiy sounds like a bitter rag to me - they had some night at Burnley too!

all I was saying was although its a good result...after all weren't these same kids the ones that thrashed spurs or something.... you cannot compare the fact that barca played with kids to you guys as eveyone pretty much everyone in your team except for one i think had played plenty of first team football last year come no english club could copy barcelona's academy...

It was another one of those games where we fought for the win, even when everyone (bookies, pundits, stats) said we should lose. I know that had this been say, the CL final, Barca would have played with Ibrah and Messi from the off. But, we won this game (even with the aforementioned players on the field), by defending as a complete unit. There is still plenty of work to be done, but we are getting there. Well done City, and well done MH.

Ibrahiy, quit while you're ahead mate. If I were you I'd get over to rag vital and start demanding some answers as to why - A) Your team can't beat Burnley; B) Fergie has made no signings of any note C) Where the CR7 money has gone. Oh, and BTW, I have seen a planning submission from the rags to Trafford Borough council asking for a number of concerts to be allowed at the swamp next summer. The application stresses that these gigs are "Necessary for the continuing economic viability of Old Trafford and Manchester United". Times are getting tough eh matey?

fcb the ronaldo money is being kept tp pay part of the 700million pound debt the rags are in.

Whether Barca did have the kids out or not, at each and every game the best thing you can do is beat the team in front of you. And for once City have done that. And Hughes is quoted as saying that Weiss was the best young player on the pitch - as well as us having Onuoha, Ireland and SWP out there. So Ibrahiyi, how come Barca couldn't copy City's academy??

it was a great result and like DJDD says weiss was great and even TBH was also good when he came fact we defended really well and took our chance when it came and bellers could have made it 2 nil just before the end...well done city.

wow...I speak to you guys in the nicest manner telling you not to get carried away you only beat the kids....tough kids to beat but kids nevertheless....and in my opinion you guys need much more improvement to get into top 4.... with that said you guys have been improving....much much better than your pre season....and I am looking forward to your challenge United are in a good financial state...if worse comes to worse the owner will sell the cllub if he needs the money its not hard to find someone to buy united....esp as the debt is his debt not the clubs... so i am not worried at the least by that... I tell the truth as i see it...i am not here to spread hate or cause problems i just point out obvious facts...I do that on any site..

An away win at a full Nou-camp against a quality side (kids or no kids they are still a quality side). How could you not be excited by that?
