Close Of 2009 Business In The City

Phew, what a scorcher! An unprecedented summer transfer window for Manchester City has come to a close and so too, Sparky's business for the year...

Time to take a step back during this nicely timed international break and survey the turnover in playing staff. This is when we begin to see just how thorough Mark Hughes' squad overhaul has been:

JANUARY 2009:

Wayne Bridge (£12 million)
Shay Given (£8m million)

2009 Squad Overhaul Totals:

IN: 12
OUT: 16
Currently LOANED: 9

Current Senior Squad Total: 24:

Given, Taylor, Richards, Zabaleta, Lescott, Onuoha, Toure, Bridge, Garrido, Sylvinho, Kompany, De Jong, Johnson, Ireland, Barry, Wright-Phillips, Petrov, Weiss, Robinho, Tevez, Benjani, Bellamy, Adebayor, Santa Cruz.

The results are staggering. Sparky, reviewing the situation a couple of weeks ago said:

'We've done excellent business in this window and made huge strides in a short space of time. It may take a few more windows before we can say we are one of the top teams in the Premier League, but I don't think we will be spending on this scale again. The players we've brought in this summer will sustain us. I'm sure we will be adding in future windows, but not buying on the scale we have this summer.'

Earlier this year the City gaffer talked of developing a smaller high quality squad of around 25 players to work with and on the evidence we've seen so far, he looks to have achieved that aim.

The key to success will now be continued consistency and a satisfactory fusion of the squad as a whole both on and off the park.

I'm very happy with the players that we've brought in this summer but I would have liked an extra attacking midfielder and to have also moved Benjani on as he is of no use to us whatsoever, but at least we got rid of Ben Haim at long last! Maybe we will look at our midfield options in the January window depending on how things are going.

Splendid business all round really, and with the exceptions of the immortal Berti and Tal Ben Haim, all of Hughes' signings have been improvements on what was already here. We've come a long way in a very short time and we now need to give the squad plenty of time to settle. Then it's time for an all out assault on the top 4 methinks.

Spot on Blues. We have a part to play too. The next media campaign bubbling under and already doing the rounds on opposition forums is the wish for Sparky to be sacked by Christmas if City are outside the top six. That's essentially going against all previous evidence and applying the Chelski model to us yet again. We've had a great start but should we falter in upcoming games, I reckon it should be a case of "Don't panic Mr. Mainwaring!" and keeping the faith.

An excellent transfer window for us. The squad looks balanced and ready to take on a hard and long season.

FCB - I'm sure that Thaksin signed Ben Haim, just like he signed Jo - Hughes then couldn't wait to get rid of them after Shinawatra left the building!

Still some rumours that Benjani will go out on loan to Notts County. Not happy with Petrov, will he try his best if he plays knowing that he wants to leave? It would have been better if Rigby's agent had kept his mouth shut.

Regardless of the jealousy out there... I have to say it must be fun watching this. I'm happy for a team like this to be put together to break the top four and also see what happens in Europe. Best of luck to you

Jim I am sure in Al Fahim is serious, then you should be doing a lot of business in January.
