Kolo And The Gang: Toure Confirmed City Skipper

Kolo And The Gang: Toure Confirmed City Skipper

City and Ivory Coast central defender Kolo Toure has been confirmed as City's new captain ahead of this weekend's humdinger with Arsenal at a packed Eastlands...

City gaffer Mark Hughes explained to the official City site:

'Kolo has taken the armband in the last couple of games and I am very comfortable with that. There might be times in the season when we might ask people to take on the mantle and show the leadership qualities that a captain has to have, but I am very comfortable with Kolo having the armband.'

Toure's appointment has surprised many of us even though he has captained his former club Arsenal in the past. Gareth Barry was widely talked up, but the boss went on:

'There were many candidates, Stevie Ireland really enjoyed doing it in pre-season, I am sure he'll be a City captain in the future and Vinnie Kompany impressed last year. It's pleasing that we have so many characters and personalities that could have taken over the role. It was not until working with him that I really understood how Kolo conducts himself as a guy and as a player. Having worked with him for a couple of months now, I have seen his qualities on and off the field and we can use them for everybody's benefit.'

Here's to a 'Celebration' on Saturday night. Er, I'll get me coat.

Thats shocked me a lot. I assumed Barry would get it. After all isn't that one of the reasons he moved to Citeh? The other reasons being money, money and money.

LifeLongBlue - I also would have selected Barry as captain, however you also forgot to add that Barry moved to us for better career prospects than what he would have had at Villa. Nobody can really be surprised by this move though as Toure has been captain for the last 2 matches and he would have been my 2nd choice. He wouldn't have been my first choice though as he will be away for several weeks at the African Cup Of Nations which will mean that we will need another captain to cover that period.

LifeLongBlue- you should check your sources mate. The reason he joined City as he put it was he wanted a fresh challenge and to play for a club with ambition he said nothing about being captain.

Barry has been sensational for us this season to date. Absolutely sensational. A snip at £12 million. Ask the all knowing Mark Lawrenson!

Toure was my first choice... anyone remember when he captained the Arsenal side that went unbeaten for a season?

Nobody knows whether Barry wanted the captain's armband. He thanklessly carried the responsibility for Villa for years. He now has a new challenge... My bet is he would rather eat his own fingers than be captain agin.

mcfcthriller - I have asked this question in the main thread, Wasn't Patrick Vieira the captain of Arsenals invincibles side which went a whole season unbeaten? I am 99% sure that he was.

Vieira was captain in 03/04. It was Kolo's first season at centre back.
