A legion of rags will always talk of Sir Alex Ferguson's inspirational words. Well, his latest attempt at mind games bizarrely fed via US radio could backfire on him...
The 67 year old perennially open mouthed chewing gummer has been getting steadily worked up about City's resurgence like a drunken Harold Ramp unable to swat a fly while an MUFC sofa burns next to him on a wasteland. Sadly shouting out only to be laughed at.
He should have packed this all in years ago as he repeatedly sets himself up for a fall.
And the rant to USA based satellite radio station Sirius XM Radio goes:
'The rivalry has gone up a notch in the last few months, with them signing all those players and then coming up with that advert and all their posters. They've been a bit, how can I put it, cocky - yes, a bit cocky.'
Ok, any Blue in town will be the first to admit that the club have been taking the piss with the 'Welcome to Manchester' posters but they've clearly hit a nerve.
Yet in an astonishingly ill informed outburst the rags boss gets his sums wrong over Mark Hughes' revamped five man, currently almost all injured strike force:
'I think they've got seven centre-forwards now, which is crazy, just amazing, but when you have spent that amount of money, and the wages they are paying, you have to win the league with that kind of investment and that's where the difficulty will come for them' he droaned.
'It's going to be very difficult for them to win the league when you see the likes of ourselves, Liverpool, Chelsea and Arsenal because they've got to beat the four of us at some point this season to get the league. It's very difficult to get into the top four and it's even more difficult to get into the top one, and that's what this league is all about - being No1.'
Get away. Obviously Taggart sees City as a clear and present danger and he's after getting his excuses in already. Repeated assertions that his side will be facing seven to ten strikers and that City, who actually signed eight players and offloaded eighteen this summer are overwhelmingly staffed belie a suggestion of concern.
'Their result on Saturday was the one that surprised people because scoring four goals against Arsenal was an emphatic result. So they have had a good start and, when you get a good start, it can galvanise you and give you confidence, and of course they've got all those players now.'
Earlier the united boss had stated that City had had a 'softish' start to the season. It's obvious that his frustration and inability to believe that he can no longer compete with City in the transfer market are combining to rattle him.
Yet another senior football figure has come out and had a go at The Blues. The signs so far are that City's 'mercenaries' and their battling work rates take great pleasure in proving people wrong.
