Get Ready To Be Ripped Off In South Africa

South African based Manchester City fan, Mariner sent us the following.

Countdown to 2010 #15

Much consternation in the ruling echelons of SAFA here as the African Cup of Nations produces some exciting results, without the presence of South Africa.

It appears that sales of tickets for Bafana's games in the opening group matches are not going well at all and if current results are anything to go by, both England and the US will have larger support than the home side. Great pity that England are not scheduled to play in Durban where we could probably fill the stadium.

The big price rip off continues. Local airlines are reported to be trebling their inland flight costs for the duration of the tournament, and the prices for an average hotel are set to rise from around R850 per night to R2800 per night. The same will apply to Bed & Breakfast accommodation, who will rip off the market for what they can get, with one upmarket home in Capetown has been let out for R1.4 million for four weeks. Cheapest tickets for the games are around R800 per person.

Commercialism and capitalism. Ain't it great?

Here in South Africa it is about ripping off the tourist, at the vodacom challenge game in Polokwane the stalls wanted R25 for a can of coke (2L usually costs around R12) on my last trip to Cape Town a restaurant on the waterfront wanted R125 for a bottle of wine which costs R30 in an off license and the items on sale here with the 2010 logo are a joke cigarette lighter usually R9 now R40 vuvuzella usually R15 now R75 even car hire companies are upping prices for the price of a flight to Cape Town rather look at getting the Blue Train. Anybody thinking of coming out here for the world cup contact me on andrew@lycopene.co.za I am in the Free State about an hour from Jhb and will try to assist any City fan with their trip Andrew

Whats all the fuss, every single country does the same so whats different about South Africa, you only have to look closer to home I:E London to see how they over price everything mainly because it's the capital and the tourist, the prices have been hiked and come the Olympics the prices will treble down there for privately rented accommodation and gimmicks to con the visiting public, so it's a non story really, a good point though for my monthly total
SIR TROYSTER
troyster is right every country does the same and SA is no different - on a different issue i would be more concerned about safety than being ripped off.
