Wright- For Riches Or The Love Of The Game?

Arsenal legend Ian Wright has laid into City's hierarchy, claiming that they are not showing his adopted son Shaun Wright-Phillips the respect he deserves.

But while fatherly concern in seeing his son sign a new contract seems a sincere motive for this outburst, there may be other reasons lying beneath the surface.

Firstly, its not as if Wright-Phillips has no future in the game as his current contract finishes in August 2012 after he signed a four year deal on his return to the club in 2008.

Nor is Wright-Phillips likely to want for anything after his career comes to an end. He has had a superb career to date with high profile moves to both glamour clubs Chelsea and City swelling the coffers in his bank account and making him a multimillionaire.

Of course, one can never have enough millions and due to Wright-Phillips signing before the Arab takeover, his contract will undoubtedly seem meagre (to him) in comparison to those who signed thereafter like Tevez, Adebayor and Kolo Toure.

His brother and father haven't exactly done badly either meaning the family itself has amassed millions from the glorious game.

Wright doesn't go into specifics of the contract on offer and rightly so, but does talk about Marwood and Cook insinuating that the way they are dealing with a player who is Blue through and through is both arrogant and condescending.

Now taking the money and contract negotiations out of the equation, one thing that does stick out is Wright's final comments about Shaun making the world cup squad.

After failing to make any of the national teams squads for a world cup finals could it be that Wrighty is more anxious himself about his son missing the world cup finals and the pain that goes hand in hand in it.

No doubt Wright is living his dreams through his son still and his sharp and insightful punditry would certainly be more in demand over in South Africa if his son was in the team.

Is Wright-Phillips' so beat up about this contract issue that it is affecting his performances and jeopardising his place on the plane to South Africa?

After all, the race for that England right spot is as hotly contested and stressful as the race for that Champions League final space and the same teams are involved in Tottenham, Villa and City.

Or is this just an unsubtle PR guilt trip by his outspoken adopted father in an effort to force the new and improved contract through more quickly by making it public knowledge?

Here's what Wrighty said: 'I tell you what was really awkward, they called him in and he wants to sign his deal, wants to sign for the rest of his career so he can be settled and get ready to go (to the World Cup in South Africa).
Worry

'But there's these people like (football administration officer) Brian Marwood and (chief executive) Garry Cook mugging him off, treating him like a youth-team player and not someone who actually wants to be there because of what he thinks Manchester City can do.'

Wright added: 'When you have people like Marwood and Cook, who for me are just a bit full of themselves(pot kettle), I'm not sure they know exactly what they are doing deep down so I'm just a bit worried about that.

'I would love him to be settled so he could just concentrate on getting City into the top four, which would be brilliant for all of them.

'That's what he wants to do and then God willing he can end up getting on the plane and going to the World Cup, doing well for England and everything would be great.

'That's what I would like to happen. But you know how football is, it's different from one week to the next.'

Does Shaun Wright-Phillips deserve a new stellar contract on this season's performances?

Surely if he gets his head down and improves his performances, he will be selected for an England team with an outside chance at glory.

If he is part of that success then the 'other' things will surely be just a formality.

Ian Wright is a cock and he's going about this all wrong and outbursts like that are just more likely to make Cock and *****wood dig their heels in. I've said on here plenty of times though... sign him up.... he's quality... he poos pure blue.. it has no smell... and at the end of the day he's asking for less than one season wonder Ireland and most of the first team squad anyway. Sign him up.

Ian Wright needs to STFU. It's none of his business, it's between Shauny and the club.

Don't give in to his Dad's pathetic attempts to manipulate the club through his own media contacts. If I was Shaun, I'd be embarrassed. SWP has been a good servant over the years and we all love him running at fullbacks but the fact of the matter is that he is now no more than a squad player. The signing of Johnson and form of Bellamy who are both better 'footballers' than SWP mean that Mancini doesn't rate him that highly and sees him as replaceable. If he can find £80,000 per week somewhere else, good luck to him.

Ian Wright, as great as footballer as he was, is an idiot. You have to look no further than his current television programme to see that. I'm sure Shaun remembers that the last time Dad took an interest in his career - he ended up getting splinters in his arse on Chelsea's bench and losing his England place. I shouldn't think he'll make the mistake of listening to the pillock again.

Its not the first time ian wright has spoken badly of city. Whether it would be through his sun column or when he had a full time spot on talksport. His rants were "city are silly to go for kaka" "arab owners dont have a clue about footballl" "city shouldnt sign adebayor" "robinho is a waster" and now "cook and marwood dont know what they are doing" It seems ian wright has forgotten that city gave swp a chance back into football when he was released by nottingham forrest. City deserve total respect from ian wright. I remember ian wright insisting that swp leave city, though very early in his football development, to join chelsea. He hasnt been the same player since .Im suprised any supporting father would make outburts that could effect his sons performance, image and relationship with team mates and the club. Wright senior is being a opportunist, capitalising on swp's super sub performance against egypt. But lets talk facts - 1) he was average last season, ordinary this season 2) Mancini clearly doesnt rate, if mourinho comes in the summer - swp stands no chance (hence why i think the urgentcy to sign a new deal before the end of the season, then move in january) 3)johnson is a better, younger player, he took swp place despite coming from the championship. Swp wont get a better contract or club elsewhere. His performances dont merit a bumper contract like tevez. I was also upset city responded within minutes of wrights rant on talksport, shows weakness. Especially to a idiot (wright senior) who doesnt deserve it.

What a devisive man. He was the one who pursuaded shaun to leave in the first place without even praising the club for his development and saying a proper goodbye to the fans. Then when things didn't work out in glamourous London he was the first to champion shaun's return and we the city fans should be thankful that he had chosen us - apparently he was coming home. Some great performances - and more average ones - later and big mouth strikes again. It just sounds a bit crass from my perspective and we should probably just ignore it as the man's far from illustrious post-football career has proved what a fool he really is.
SkyBlueSuedeShoes
I love how Johnson has 2 good games and is already better than Sweep. Instead of football at the stadium they should just dangle some shiny keys at people and say look at the shiny shiny.
MCFC_Goatboy
Everyone is in agreement then. Pull your socks up Shaun and tell your dad to pipe down. "shiny shiny" lol
lando78
i dont believe ian wright would put his sons chances of not going to another world cup at stake - ian wright is a knob but he has to speak out for his son and lift the lid on cook and marwood and i believe he is doing that because he knows how much most of us love sweep and wants us to do something about it because cook and marwood are a pair of first class ****S
bluemooner_mcfc
Well they better get it sorted because this upsets me SWP is my favourite and if he goes without experiencing winning something with City I don’t care about winning anything again!
mcfcthriller
An unpleasant episode is unfolding. This needs to be sorted out during this two week football break for our club. We don't want any distractions going into The Final Countdown.
Johnny Baguette
cook and marwood get sweeps contract sorted out NOW or else im gonna track you down.
Mike Hunt
GOOD TO SEE YOU KNOCKING ABOUT AGAIN MIKE HUNT - WE ALL HAVE MISSED YOU SO MUCH ;0)
bluemooner_mcfc
Swp contract shouldnt be signed until the summer, when we know if mancini will still be manager. If he is, he will go for a ribery, di maria or silva. Mancini may not want to keep swp. If mourinho comes in, swp will be sold. As for any other manager, its up to them what to do. If ian and shaun dont like it, thats their problem.
Super City Slicker
is Ian Wright doing what all our own Father's would do in wanting the best things possible in life for our own offspring? he's speaking out cos IF things are to be believed SWP is not asking for Mega money, just to be here for the rest of his playing life, but he has to improve on the pitch to get what he wants, as he has lost some of his spark he had before he went to Chelsea, and he still has 2 years left on his current deal, so is there a need to get it rushed out now? i can't see a problem waiting, IF it's not about a financial thing!!!! but 'Johnson is better than him' not yet, maybe in the future, he's only had 2 matches in a City shirt!
