YOU Are The Mancio - Name Your 25 Man City Squad

When City return from the USA, an already exciting close season is set to find a dramatic edge. Roberto Mancini must now trim his squad and a sizeable player offload is on the cards...

Depending upon which hack you read or 'in the know' you have the ear of, City are poised to bring in Fernando 'Santa' Torres or 'Super' Mario Balotelli or James '30 Mill' Milner or all three of them inside the next few days.

Were those signatures to be made, The Citizens current first team squad would top the 40 mark.

Right now, with the acquisition of Aleksander Kolarov, City's squad stands at 39 with the previous season's raft of loan stars already back with us. That number must be reduced dramatically in the coming fortnight under the new Premier League 'Home Grown Player' rules and the likelihood is that we will see an unprecedented rotation of the SportCity entrance doors with a fleet of taxis arriving on Ashton New Road.

The rule change is sure to realise high profile omissions across the Premier League and some senior players may well find themselves sitting in the stands.

Outside of exceptional circumstances such as goalkeeper injuries, the 'Home Grown Player' rule can be best briefly explained as follows:

1. A Homegrown Player is defined as one who irrespective of his nationality or age has been registered with an English or Welsh club for a period of three years between his 16th and 21st Birthdays. 8 of these players must be named in a club's squad of 25 players for the league season.

2. As a result, the season will be deemed as starting at the close of this summer's transfer window until the last match of the campaign. Final Premier League 25 man squads must be registered by 5pm on 1st September and again at the end of January's transfer window.

City's squad has been under reconstruction for the best part of three years now and Roberto Mancini is close to completing the squad strengthening that he pinpointed as City completed the last season with a best ever Premier League finish.

So who's in your 25 man City squad? YOU are the suave and dapper gaffer with some axe work to do. Debate has raged in the VMC Forums over who's for the chop and with each new signing, the task becomes more difficult!

Below you will find City's current first team squad. As agents, hacks and players desperately make calls in what is sure to be a coming fire sale - loaned out frenzy of activity around Eastlands, get your calculators out and tell us who you think will be in Mancio's September Selection Box. Drop us a line here or in the VMC Forums with your 25.

Premier League Chief Executive Peter Scudamore:

"As of next season clubs will be required to have a squad named of up to 25 players, of which no more than 17 can be over the age of 21 and not home grown. The definition of home grown is trained for three years under the age of 21 by somebody in the English and Welsh professional system.

"Clubs will have to declare their 25 at the end of August when the window shuts and then again at the end of January."

"It's not in the club's interests to stockpile players. It will make buying home-grown talent more attractive. We're not going down the route of a nationality test but what this will mean is that you just can't buy a team from abroad.

"We think it will give clubs an extra incentive to invest in youth. We think that one of the benefits will be that it will help the England team."

Santa Cruz, Ireland, Wright-Phillips, Bellamy, Richards,Onuoha and Bridge the ones to go, most likely. Most of the other extra players are under 21, right? Don't have to be registered, then.

That being said, eight home-grown players in the squad already are Given,Taylor, Hart, Lescott, Adam Johnson, Barry, Michael Johnson, with the potential transfer of Milner yet to come. So there shouldn't be too much of a problem with the HG rule.

As it stands we've to cut our senior squad by six, the most likely IMO will be Robinho, Jo, Caceido, Etuhu, Logan and Garrido/Bridge. Balotelli won't have to be named in 25, if indeed he does come. Obviously if we sign anyone else over21 then one will have to go to make space.

Aren't the likes of Ibrahim, Weiss, Boyata and Nimely exempt due to them being U21 though? We still need to cut though.

The rule only applies to Prem games anyway so keep the lot and have different squads for 1. Prem. 2. Fa Cup. 3. Europa Cup. 4. League Cup. No problem at all.

Right then. Here's my predicted PL named 25 which assumes those three hotly rumoured incoming signings and rumoured senior departures....I'm running with 11 Home Grown Players (H) and going for 3 keepers with 5 strikers. Hart H, Given H, Taylor H, Lescott H, Zabaleta, Boateng, Richards H,Onuoha H, Toure, Kolarov, Barry H, A Johnson H, Vieira, Y. Toure, De Jong, Kompany, SWP H, Milner H, Ireland H, Silva, Tevez, Balotelli, Adebayor, Santa Cruz, Torres....I'm guessing Crocky will stay and Bellers will go while the likes of other Academy lads either stay on or go out on loan....

If that is our 25 JB I can't see any reason why City won't be challenging for the PL title this season.

Here is the Squad I would choose, it dosent seem very hard to sort out at all. Those 21 and under as I understand do not count in the 25, but do correct me if I'm wrong. Goalies 1. Given 2. Taylor 3. Hart 4. Nielsen Loan 6 months but pos still get number Defenders Boateng 21 yrs Vidal 21yrs 5. Lescott Boyata 21yrs 6. Kolarov 7. Onuoha Cunningham 19 yrs 8. Richards 9. Garrido 10. Bridge 11. Zabaleta 12. K. Toure Midfielders Ibrahim 19 yrs 13. A. Johnson 14. Silva 15. Barry 16. Vieira 17. Y. Toure 18. De Jong 19. Ireland M. Johnson out till he proves fitness back pos return in jan 20. Kompany Weiss 20 yrs Forwards 21. Adebayor 22. Bellamy Nimely 19yrs 23. Robinho Santa Cruz out till fitness shown Caicedo 21 24. Tevez 25. Wright-Phillips Balotelli 19 yrs I have droped or they could be loaned or sold :- 1. S. Logan 2. Gonzales 3.Etuhu 4. Jo. I did drop Wright-Phillips but I just ******** bring myself to do it, This isn't as hard as I'd thought, simple! There are a lot more than 8 home grown players i.e 1. Taylor 2. Hart 3. Vidal? 4. Lescott 5. Boyata? 6. Onuoha 7.Cunningham 8. Richards 9. Bridge 10. Ibrahim? 11. A. Johnson 12. Barry 13. Ireland 14. M. Johnson (when fit) 15. Weiss 16.Bellamy 17. Nimely

Top work Alan! I must ask this question though, correct me if I'm wrong, but once City name their 25, then say we have an injury crisis, can any of our lads like Boyata and Ibrahim step into league competition? I know they have that exceptional circumstances rule. As Jack says, we could be looking at a four squads situation! Now that might help with injury recovery...?

"can any of our lads like Boyata and Ibrahim step into league competition?" Yes JB, any player under21 can be used, without having to be named in the 25.
