'If It's Football, It's Vital'

*Video* Ex-City Chairman Swales

Blast from the past: Those of you who are old enough will remember ex-Manchester City chairman Peter Swales' infamous interview on Kick Off - Friday December 1st 1989, in which he reveals the club have approached Oldham for permission to talk to Joe Royle about the City manager's job, just hours before Oldham play Blackburn at Boundary Park.

He also denies Howard Kendall was 'in the frame' for the job - a total fib - and equates changing managers to buying a new television.

Who remembers Mr Swales and what are your memories?

I met him! A dubious honour. I was invited to a Villa - City game by a certain violinist friend of mine. I seem to remember we lost 2-0.. or.. in hindsight, did we win 2-0!! Yes.. I love hindsight. There are such brill memories there. I remember that Andy Gray was in the room at full time, and for some strange reason.. Peter Read! I told Swales that my dad had been a lifelong City supporter and friend of Frank Swift. Swales shrunk away from me like I was something out of another world.. Then.. I knew I was.. I saw it in his eyes.

Andy Gray was still blonde, and he still had a bit of hair. Doug Ellis looked at me. Just a glance, with all the bearing of a 19th century mill owner. I must have looked a bit like Sparticus at the time, the way he glanced at me, I obviously looked like a slave who wasn't big enough to be dangerous. I glanced back at him in the same moment. He puffed up. A strange hint of a smile crossed my lips.

Two all time classic posts Roy! Do you recall that CITY! documentary in the early 80's when Big Mal's second coming collapsed and John Bond came in? It's still knocking about on YouTube. Fascinating to watch Swales in boardroom kingpin action. Meanwhile, whatever happened to my silk scraf with John 007 Bond emblazoned on it?

Nice one Johnny, it probably went the way of all silk scarfs.. lost at the dogs.. along with a house or two.
