City Drawn Against Romanian Side FC Timisoara

Manchester City has been drawn against little known Romanian side FC Timisoara in the Europa League play-off round.

The first leg is to be played on Thursday 19 August at the 32,019 capacity Dan Paltinisanu stadium before playing the return leg a week later.

Blues' boss Roberto Mancini commented...

'It will be a difficult game and any team from Romania will provide stiff opposition, particularly on their own ground.'

'We will look forward to both legs and obviously look to ensure we move to the group stages of the competition.'

FC Timisoara - Wikipedia

Fotbal Club Timisoara is a Romanian football club which was established in 2002 and is currently playing in Romania's top league, Liga I.

Before 2002 the team played in the third and the second league under the name of AEK Bucuresti. The club was rebranded when the owner Anton Dobos moved the team to Timisoara after obtaining promotion to Liga I, finishing 1st in the 2001-02 season of Liga II, Seria 1.

However, there was an issue regarding the club's rights to the records of the team that played at Timisoara in the top Romanian league for 35 seasons in the 20th century, FC Politehnica Timisoara. There is an ongoing trial at this moment to resolve the entire problem.

Thanks for your kind words PinkToffee. The Dan Paltinisanu Stadium looks bloody awful and TBH I would be amazed if we took more than 1000 Blues over.

No worse than a trip to Analfield :P In all seriousness, it looks a hole, but you will have to wait and see what travel arrangements the club can make, I know Everton and the supporters clubs did some great stuff for us.

Are they based in Romania or Detroit? I wouldn't want to go there for the Champions League Final, let alone a Europa League playoff game.

With Lager in Romania at £0.85 GBP (source http://www.pintprice.com/region.php?/Romania/GBP.htm) I don't think you'll worry too much about the surroundings.

Does all of Romania look like that? I don't want to have the wrong opinion about a country based on one lousy stadium area.
