'If It's Football, It's Vital'

Elite Development Squad Take on Reds

With both City and United's second strings well placed to top their group, they come head to head and probably toe to toe tonight at Ewen Fields in what promises to be one of the matches of the week - yes and that includes the Champions League.

In August United fielded what could well be regarded as a Carling Cup team against the City youngster and finally came out on top in the Manchester Senior Cup tie, as their superior fitness took its toll late on in the game.

This time however with United having to face Rangers away tomorrow in the Champions League, tonight's test could be an interesting one as they will have to field a true reserve team.

Fit again John Guidetti should be leading City's attack. With 3 goals in his last 5 outings, I have long held the view that John would add more to the first team squad that the likes of Santa Cruz and want-away Adebayor and I would love to see Mancini put him in.

At the back the defence should be marshalled by Ben Mee fresh from his first England U/21 match ladt week.

Having watched this level of football for many years, indeed going back to the days when a first team player coming back from injury would use the reserves matches to hone his fitness, I still admit to getting a buzz when I watch our stars of tomorrow play for their stripes. I'm secretly hoping that Michael Johnson could be near ready for a look-in.

So if you're thinking of watching the Champions League at home tonight, why? There is quality live football to be seen in front of what we hope will be a bumper audience at Ewen Fields. Kick-off is 7pm and there are loyalty points for cardholders tonight.
