'If It's Football, It's Vital'

June Kelly - a Battler Once in our Midst

How refreshing is it to see 'ordinary ' people recognised in the New Year's Honours List.

For once not a third rate actor getting a gong for third rate service to acting, but this time a young woman whose dedication to the provision of football to a large number of kids in an area deprived of activities, has proved to be a winner.

June Kelly has battled away for many years coaching and managing a group of junior teams in the Cheetham Hill area of Manchester centred on Abraham Moss. Almost single-handedly she has fund-raised, managed and developed young footballing talent across the whole spectrum of ages, colours, races and genders. She even took on the might of the FA in the belief that some kick-offs should be delayed so that Asian players could enjoy refreshments during Ramadan.

June for many years worked tirelessly as a Steward at Maine Road and after each match she would wait by the players exits to get footballs and autograph books signed for them to be raffled to help raise the funds necessary to keep her teams running.

She has toiled relentlessly for around 20 years now and at long last is getting the recognition that she deserves.

A warm congratulations, June, from all at VMC!

They interviewed her at half time against blackpool but no one could understand a word she was saying. Congratulation all the same though :)
