Yaya Toure is adamant that Manchester City can become a major European footballing force. With The Blues active on three fronts right now, morale is high at SportCity...
City fans across Planet Blue are still getting used to having serious objectives in February, nevermind where we'll be in two years time!
But it won't do any harm whatsoever for a City player to talk up his club's aspirations.
There has been something of a sea change in City player interviews this season. The likes of Given, Santa Cruz, Bellamy and Adebayor relentlessly talk about themselves rather than the clubs that employ them, whereas in recent months we've seen key City players increasingly talk about the cause rather than whether they should be playing or not or where they will go next.
The calmly focused Patrick Vieira, Roberto Mancini's dressing room elder statesman has certainly led by example with that approach.
Yaya has told The Currant Bun:
'In a couple of years we could be better than Barcelona. What we need to do is continue to work hard and improve with every game...You cannot compare Barcelona with City right now because Barca are at the top and have top quality players...I keep saying to my brother Kolo and my family that City have great players but we need to continue to work hard to become great.'
Of course, these words have met with another wave of anti-City propaganda across the media, but more and more hacks and the bitterest of rivals are becoming resigned to the fact that Manchester City aren't going to be going away meekly into the night anymore. We'll keep coming back.
There was a telling couple of moments in the aftermath of City's 5-0 FA Cup win over Notts County. citytv filmed the regular post match interview with Roberto Mancini. It was clear from discussions in the background outside the dressing room and Mancio's interaction with Yaya himself that all those desperate stories of poor morale in Mancio's squad are questionable.
