Away Fans And Their Annoying Chants
Kyle sent Vital Manchester City the following rant:
I don't know if many of you Blues have noticed but most of the away fans who visit Eastlands have started to pick up rather annoying chants and to be honest I've just about had enough of them.
Now don't take this the wrong way but if a chant was backed up by a solid fact then I can handle it - for example. United and the '35 years' chant! But the one that really, really gets on my nerves is 'Where were you when you were s***?' Now that chant really gets up my nose and when anybody sings it, well I have to say in my experience the worst team for it are Newcastle!
Last season when Newcastle was in the Championship I read an article in a very respectable broadsheet paper, the name of which escapes me. In that article the journo said that Geordie fans should look at us Blues as an example for how to support a team outside the Premier League! This was due to the fact that when the Barcodes were in the second tier their average attendance dropped by 24-28% whereas when we went down to the Old Division Two our average attendance only dropped by 4-6%!
On a final note and whilst I am on the subject of Newcastle...
I would like to leave you with another irritating chant. Are you ready? Then shall we sing in harmony...

You're more than right about the Geordies. Before Keegan in the early 90's their gates where averaging below 15000. They are sky generation fans that know nothing about football before the premiership. They are not even in the class of you City boys.
I for one would back you as the best supporters in the land in any argument.
The money does make me sick, but if someone has to have it there could be many.many worse teams in your position.

Hmm, forgive my pessimistic view but i hardly think that descending into mental illness, alcoholism, erratic behaviour in a BBC studio/city centre/hotel/AA meeting/China/Portugal and attempting to talk sense into a gun toting body building suicidal murderer via The Angling Times, a sandwich and a silly grin is 'doing alright'. Perhaps they have different standards of alright in the north east.

Like i say it really does annoy me because they are really uneducated as football fans. i mean for instance im only 22 n know a lot more about some rival teams than their own fans. as for the articles tudor im hoping it to be the first of many with me resulting in joining the team hopefully fingers crossed

Is there any way to sing, "We were averaging over 45,000 when we were ****!" back at them? I think we averaged about what we are doing now in the 04/05 season even.

Kyle. This has been a constant source of irritation for years. At least us Blues can always hold our heads up and say..we were then on that cold November night when we lost 0-1 to Wycombe and were fourth bottom of Division 1! I'm sure we'll be welcoming you to the team.

the main thing about the chanting etc is for example when we were in division 2 i was only 10 years old and all my friends around me were deviating to salford but at such a young and impressionable age with all my mates doing it around me i held strong and followed the cause because unlike too many people nowadays i am a true football fan not a member of the prawn sandwich brigade as one of their own legends labelled them!

'Where were you when you were s***?' I take that drivel chant as an absolute compliment. We were there in the third division, that's where.

I think a fan base that doesn't embrace it's history just shows what type of fans they are. We were s*** at one point, and we may be again someday, but regardless, we're still here. You can't say that about some of the clubs with "history" once the banks come to collect their money.
