VMC Man of The Match Special: Silva The Flop

The VMC Forum has sent up the sky blue smoke to name The Citizens 53rd Man of The Match of the campaign. We look back at what the experts said about David Silva last year...

Daily Torygraph, September 2010:

'Silva's slight physical stature and failure to make an impact have led to suggestions that he might find himself out of his depth in the dog-eat-dog world of the English game...As Steve Bruce might say, 'that boy needs to get on the weights.'

Das Daily Mail, October 2010:

'Barcelona could rescue David Silva from Manchester City if the Spain midfielder continues to struggle at Eastlands. The lightweight 24-year-old only signed on at City in the summer, but there are already question marks over his £24million move from Valencia. Silva has struggled to recreate his La Liga form in England.'

La Cadena Ser Radio, Spain:

'Atletico Madrid are set to offer unsettled Manchester City star David Silva an escape route back to Spain. Silva, 23, started the Blues' opening Premier League match against Tottenham but has since been demoted to the substitute's bench. Manager Roberto Mancini has insisted the lightweight playmaker will need time to adapt to the frantic nature of the top flight.'

The Bleacher Report, September 2010:

'David Silva showed weak performances at the beginning matches and there is the reason why you did not see him featured in the next ones...Silva was not needed by City, but needed to be sold by the cash strapped Valencia...Silva could have forged a greater career elsewhere like in SPL but not in the EPL.'

The Daily Rag Mirror, September 2010:

'City flops Adebayor for Real Madrid and Silva for Atletico.', August 2010:

'Transfer flop: David Silva. I can see him getting kicked off the pitch by every full back he faces. If his temperament is right, then he'll prosper but I'm calling it now… He'll be back in Spain within 12 months.'

Funny how they deride city players for a slow start, yet dross like Obertan and Bebe are still classed as potential stars.

Anyone remember the Talksport/Soccer Saturday types saying "Yaya who?" (forget that he won the Champions League AND did so by playing centre-back against United) and deriding his mythical 350,000,000 GBP/week (or something like that) wages. I love it when we rub it in these scummy pundits' faces. That cokehead Merson is the worst for bashing us, said we had "no chance" of winning the FA Cup semi or finishing 4th. One down, one to go.

Like Dzeko is a bigger flop then Torres.... :S Funny thing is once we qualify for CL and hopefully(fingers crossed) we win the FA cup the media will suddenly write with different tinted glasses. Probably not about Balo thou, as he´s selling half their papers..

Even as a United fan I can admit the guy has been a sensation for you, so far anyway. The comments about him being lightweight is a fair prediction though, I remember fcb on VMU talking about how Hernandez was too light weight from the Premier League and that he would flop due to it. As for Bebe and Obertan eigthsin, they're both still very young and massive prospects and understanbly won't attract even a tenth of the media attention Silva did due to the price comparison. Rule them out if it makes you happy, many ruled out Ronaldo, Nani and Valencia and one went on to become the best player out there and the other 2 some of the finest wingers in the Premier League at the moment.

@TheFamousNo7 but in PLs your best wingers score occasionally and only the Old giggs create a lot of winning moments for you. just write off giggs from ur squad, and play with your youngees and we'll see how ur best wingers in PL shines!!!!

Well one of our wingers has racked up an incredible 18 assists and 9 goals, the other has just returned from injury but even still is cause left backs across the country issues, his assist count last season said it all. Wingers aren't supposed to score btw, fair enough they chip in every now and then, which they have done to perfection but their primary objective is to assist, which they have also done to perfection. As for implying we're a one man team (again, seriously? This is getting boring, 1st Ronaldo then Rooney then Scholes and now Giggs) it's a team effort, we prove it continuously.

Yep famous, watching the rags is a veritable feast of synchronised gamesmanship, cheating, pouting and screaming. Teamwork - that's what counts! ;)

Obertan may have potential but Bebe is non-league level and I buy into the theory of something fishy about his transfer and bungs. Even Crawley Town's defenders had him in their pocket, never seen a worse player at this level not named Ali Dia.

Stu, how many times have you even seen Bebe play? Bearing in mind he's only 20 years old he's entitled to be inconsistent. His had a massive change in environment, culture and tradition and has no family, or anything of the sort to comfort him it's going to be a hard transitionary phase for Bebe. As for his potential, he had many teams interested in him before he had even played a game for Vitória de Guimarães including Real Madrid. 7 first team appearances and 2 goals with 5 of the matches won, not a bad start if you ask me. fcb, you forgot winning and lifting trophies ;)

I wish more people would say that 20 year old Balotelli is entitled to be inconsistent after his massive change in environment, culture and tradition.

Balotelli is a media scapegoat Johnny, whilst the rational man might say he's young and inconsistent, the media driven idiots will just knock him at any occasion.

That statement about "Media driven idiots" is fair enough, and it's nice to hear it from the other side of the fence - but unfortunately, 99% of united fans fall into that category, ie they love to derride Balotelli. And fair play about Bebe, I've not seen him play even once, so perhaps he will develop into a half-decent playter. But I think even most united fans are prepared to admit that Obertan has been a huge disappointment.

Obertan has his moments but overall has been a disappoinment but so was Nani for 2 1/2 years, a lot of fans do need to remember they're young and need to be nurtured rather than tut and nodding in disappointment everytime they do the slightest thing wrong. Fair dues with most of our support being media driven idiots, I won't deny that I even fall into that category at times but don't we all?
