'If It's Football, It's Vital'

In The Know Harry Predicts Mancio Cash Splash

Chirpy cockernee gaffer Harold Redknapp took time out from monitoring goal crazy Liverpool last night to foresee a Manchester City doshfest this summer...

'I know people in the right positions there (at City) have said 'the one thing we couldn't offer was Champions League football...but they tell me they've got one or two players signed already who'll blow your brains out. They aren't going to stop until they win the championship and even then the Champions League, are they?

'...The man from Abu Dhabi has got so much money. They're going to spend another £200 million probably this summer.'

Shrewd City Chairman Khaldoon Al Mubarak recently declared that the days of mass recruitment at Eastlands are over and it is highly likely that Roberto Mancini will be afforded the funding required to bolster his squad in a couple of key areas.

The more Harry offloads on City however, the more you get the feeling that he might well be angling for the Spurs board to spend big:

'City have got a strong squad which is only going to get better because they've got unlimited funds to buy anybody they want, and they can pay the wages. They've got players there now earning £200,000 a week. I mean, it's crazy, isn't it? It's another world really. I don't see what will stop them. They will keep improving their squad until eventually they will win the title.'

This theory is all well and good, but the biggest challenge of all is in a manager fusing those signings to build a team. The money counts for nothing if the players can't get it together and if anything Harry has overlooked the efforts of the managerial colleague he squares up to tonight.

The fact facing us this week is that if Roberto Mancini can secure Champions League football in East Manchester next season AND end a trophy drought of 35 years, then those achievements will qualify as something of a miracle, regardless of how much money the club has spent.

The City boss is tantalisingly close to realising these targets inside 18 months at the controls and in this correspondent's opinion deserves at least some credit for what he's made happen thus far rather than those facts being bypassed in favour of the perception that he is nothing more than a cheque book boss.

JOHNNY MARR APPEARS AT CITY SQUARE TUESDAY NIGHT:

Guitarist Johnny Marr, City defender Jerome Boateng, and local band Supra, will be special guests for tonight's super 'Live From City Square' for the Spurs game.

They'll be alongside the ever-popular Fanzone Danny in a great line-up for another sensational free show hosted by top anchorman Hugh Ferris and former Blues favourite Nicky Summerbee.

I always find it amusing that if we win it is because we have spent so much money....but if we lose it is a salutary lesson that money cannot but you a team!!
