Phil Dowd In Charge Of Community Shield

The FA announced today that Phil Dowd will referee the Community Shield between Manchester City and Manchester United at Wembley Stadium on 7 August.

The 48-year-old said...

'The Community Shield will be my third game at Wembley Stadium and I'm really excited about it. It's such a special place and you get a real buzz when stepping out on that pitch.'

Phil began his career in his native Staffordshire before joining the Football League list in 1997. In 2001 he was appointed to the Select Group Referees list meaning he was qualified to officiate Premier League and other top level matches.

We may have a chance at some reasonable decisions .........

Was it not Dowd who didn't send off Vidic in the Carling Cup Final against Villa? Nailed on red card for me and it would have left them short-handed and 0-1 down after 2 minutes! I suspect the Competition organisers interfered somewhere

Dowd has also made some tough calls going against United at the Swamp, so while the Carling Cup was an unfortunate game for him, he has proven that he's unbiased.

And on a related note, it's a good thing it's not Howard Webb, because that would have been a guaranteed loss.
