'If It's Football, It's Vital'

'Arry: Unlike City We Don't Need To Splash Cash

Tottenham boss Harry Redknapp opened his mouth in a typical cockney manner by pointing out his squad has been put together for only a small percentage of the money City manager Roberto Mancini has spent.

City are where they are because of Sheikh Mansour and Chelsea thanks to Roman Abramovich,' Harry told The Sun.

'We have not done it that way and it makes me proud. You don't have to go out and spend fortunes to find good players.'

'Spurs are not third in the Premier League because someone has walked through the door at White Hart Lane and slapped a bundle of money on my desk.'

'City can pay players £200,000 a week, it's unbelievable. The people running Spurs have invested wisely.'

Harry continued to say...

Some of the players we brought in raised eyebrows, like Younes Kaboul, but he's made excellent progress. Hopefully it is coming together now.'

I wonder if the future England manager in waiting will leave White Hart Lane in similar circumstances to when he left Portsmouth and Southampton - heavily in debt and virtually bankrupt. We'll wait and see.

"I wonder if the future England manager in waiting will leave White Hart Lane in similar circumstances to when he left Portsmouth and Southampton - heavily in debt and virtually bankrupt. We'll wait and see." love it Tudor. Spurs current squad not including those on loan cost a combined £150 million, is that not fortunes? I know relatively speaking it doesn't come close to City but it's still fortunes is it not?
Bluedub
Nice to see Tottenham doing things the Arsenal way.
fifthcolumnblue
What you mean Fifth? By putting themselves up on a pedestal as some sort of paragon of virtue? Very Arsenalesque.
Bluedub
Touched a nerve has he??? I don't think he was having a pop and secretly he would love the money you lot have but he does have a point! I'm sure if you took your blinkers off you would see that. Spurs are punching above their weight. However, no one could argue that what they have achieved is nothing short of amazing...... So far. COYS
MATTSPUR
Your forgetting that Spurs always balance the books, have a strict wage cap and more often than not turn big profits on players. in the last 4 years we've recouped £90m in transfers out. We have an astute chairman with a degree in economics, dont think he's going to allow the club to become bankrupt, is he. Before you type your comments why not try thinking about them. Take your blinkers off for one sec mate
hawkerdinho
Remember Arry bad form, just like the taxman, could be just around the next corner. Choose your words wisely at this time of the season.
RobsonGreensleeves
Yes they could Matt and I will argue against that. Like I said above your current squad cost £150 million, you are doing better than I expected as you seem to be coping with absences very well so far but for me, and I said this at the start of the season, Spurs have the second best XI in the league.
Bluedub
Hawkerdinho, 'arry is talking about spending, I am merely pointing out how much was SPENT on your current squad.
Bluedub
The team that spurs had out against villa cost £47m. That is £2m less than than Torres alone! That just about somes it up!
MATTSPUR
you'll have to when Modic goes to Chelsea 'Arry
Buzz Lightyear
Your owner is so financially astute that he has all his business interests registered in the Cayman Islands so he doesn't have to pay UK tax. What a paragon of virtue. Wonder whether that other tax avoider associated with your club will have one eye on his court case for defrauding HMRC the day after our match? Brown envelopes all round!
fifthcolumnblue
Phrase of the day - paragon of virtue
MATTSPUR
Are you a Sesame Street fan Matt?
Bluedub
The press just love a Harry quote! I doubt Harry just decided to make that statement (not that it isn’t the truth) those quotes (and most probably Van Der Vaart’s too) are direct responses to questions from the press. Both City and Spurs should be wary of mind games as no one can compete with Fergie in that department. As far as the quotes go the average spurs starting 11 this season were purchased at less then the cost of Augero and Lescott alone! So he’s not talking out of his “cockney” backside
DazzaTHFC
Don't agree Dazza, he said Spurs don't spend fortunes, the amount you've spent on your current squad suggests otherwise.
Bluedub
Course! Who isn't! The makers of that programme were actually charged with fraud. What a paragon of virtue!
MATTSPUR
"Your owner is so financially astute that he has all his business interests registered in the Cayman Islands so he doesn't have to pay UK tax." (adj) : shrewd, clever, crafty, cunning. Id say not paying UK Tax is pretty astute actually. Nothing dodgy about having your finances work best for you,
hawkerdinho
Bluedub - I think Harry is talking in general about Financial clout not on what has been spent. We have only been able to spend big as the club is run properly.
hawkerdinho
And you said I need to think before I type and take my blinkers off Hawkerdinho? LMFAO!
Bluedub
Bluedub - It’s all relative really Spurs have spent fortunes if you compare to the likes of Everton or Villa but compared to United and Liverpool we haven’t and City and Chelsea have spent way beyond their means as a football club. A classic example is last season – Chelsea’s season is going a bit tits up so in January they spend over 70m of oil money to put things right other clubs like Spurs cannot do this. So when you find yourself 8pts above Chelsea in January and 3pts below City it is something to be proud of. You guys are going to get this every season, it’s just something you’re going to have to live with, with that sort of revenue available comes enormous pressure to eclipse the teams around you. Spurs desperately needed a striker in the summer and not any old striker a striker who could help us with our CL qualification aspirations di we go out and buy Augero 35m 200k a week, Dzeko 27m 200k a week, Balotelli 22m 150k a week? No because we 1 don’t turn over that sort of money and 2. Are not owned by the UAE royal family / Russian Mafia. We had to lend your 5th choice striker and get you to pay 70 per cent of his wages
DazzaTHFC
Harry is talking about spending fortunes, Spurs have spent fortunes, simple as that.
Bluedub
No blinkers mate, just facts; Its a simple case of you have lots of Money and we do not. Whatever way you look at it you are throwing money at this league and not pulling away. Simple facts no blinkers.
hawkerdinho
Where are you getting your wages from the S*n? Dzeko on£200k? Get a grip. Aguero, Yaya and T***z are the only ones in the squad on that type of money. T***z who is reportedly our highest paid player is on a basic of £160k, this is before image rights or pay related bonus which can see him earn up to the figures you're talking about. You've just proved to me that you're just another sheep that believes tabloid nonsense. And btw I already acknowledged it is all relative in my first comment. 'arry says Spurs don't spend fortunes, they do, that is my point.
Bluedub
Bluedub - You lost the value of our squad in one financial year haha, You throw money away for fun mate. 190m to assemble a squad that can challenge for the top 4 is not fortunes by any stretch of the imagination.
hawkerdinho
Hawk, my blinkers comment was in relation to your post about Joe Lewis' Cayman accounts. I like how you twisted it though, clever.;)
Bluedub
Whats blinkered about not wanting to pay UK tax : )
hawkerdinho
Bluedub LOL apologies if I slightly exaggerated the wages but not too far off to be fair, For 160k a week we could pay Lennon, VDV and Modric and still have enough left over to fund the xmas ***** up party. And yes but it’s pretty obvious Harry was comparing our spending to yours, Chelsea’s and manures when he used the words fortunes so I don’t get why your so aggrieved with it really??
DazzaTHFC
Don't be so naive Hawk. And it's £150 mil btw and it is fortunes
Bluedub
Oi Bluedub. You seem to be a bit dim here. You are right to support your team of high flying wannabees. But do not forget that you have won little silverware to shout about in the past 100 years and what you are now achieving is not through your own endeavours but the generosity of others. Spurs may or may not spend a small fortune but they are spending their own money where you and others are not. That in itself gives us pride in what we achieve. Any old rich geezer can pay a tart to drop her drawers.... That does not make him a stud... Just a sad git.... bit like the Chavs and Citeh supporters who think they are the bees knees just because some geezers are bankrolling them. COYS
4everaspur
Isn't it nice to have a debate with rival fans and in doing so keeping the comments civilised. Credit to both sets of supporters (claps). Long may it continue.
Tudor
In not aggrieved Dazza, I'm just saying imo he's wrong because Spurs have spent fortunes. And as for paying your players wages, you are not taking into account image rights or pay related bonuses on them wages. Spurs may have a wage limit of £90k I believe? Don't kid yourself into thinking that's all the top players can earn in a week.
Bluedub
What's not?!
RobsonGreensleeves
Ah, cheers for bringing up the old "No History" Chestnut - it truly is the footballing equivalent of Godwins Law. By the way, why in the hell would you choose to name yourelf after a dirty rag player if you're a Tottenham fan?
fifthcolumnblue
Do we have to fall out already? The game's not for 9 days! Who else is loving that on a day when United play at the Filth, City v Spurs is the game everyone's talking about it?! :)
Stratty
I was wondering when we see the first insult on this thread. Cheers Evraspur, btw I have never claimed that we are where we are without the money we were lucky enough to have received. Dim? Hmmm
Bluedub
By the way, why in the hell would you choose to name yourelf after a dirty rag player if you're a Tottenham fan? fifthcolumnblue Forever a Spur - Nothing to do with Patrice Haha
hawkerdinho
Dim yes you cant even spell my name properly.
4everaspur
Also, is it me, or is City v Spurs becoming the game of the season, every season? Two Champions League play offs, and now a top of the table clash. I shouldn't be doing this - Wolves, Wolves, Wolves...
Stratty
Stratty, no one is falling out, we were having a discussion with some good natured banter until Evraspur came on and decided to insult me with his first comment. Shame!
Bluedub
HAHAHAHA! Hook, line and sinker^^^ and you're calling us dim? Cheers hawk and 4 EVRA, you've made me smile PMSL! At least we can all laugh together at this one:

http://www.london24.com/sport/arsenal/keeper_gunners_can_catch_manchester_city_manchester_united_and_spurs_1_1176838

fifthcolumnblue
Bluedub states. "Don't be so naive Hawk. And it's £150 mil btw and it is fortunes" Is this not an insult if so then it predates me claiming you are a bit dim, which in itself is no more or less insulting but probably more accurate.
4everaspur
name calling is insulting - suggesting someone is naive is not quite in the same league and can be rebutted. Still, love the way you fell for the Evra gag!
fifthcolumnblue
Suggesting someone is naive is not an insult. Calling someone dim is.
Bluedub
So, the Spurs manager is a tax cheat along with the owner...and yet the fans support him 100% and say we're ruining football with the amount of money we spent on our players. And how many players did 'Arry steal from Portsmouth when he left through backroom deals and shady businessmen because Pompey were hard up for cash and couldn't keep those contracts? Just because you got them in a dodgy way doesn't mean they aren't worth what you paid for them. Ask 'Arry, he knows how to get something without paying for it.
PhillyBlueMoon
5th column blue... hilarious on the goons keeper! Im loving this season, if we beat Wolves, what a game at the Etihad next week!
Stratty
Btw Evraspur to say something predates something else suggests it happened on a date before the second thing happens. Both these comments were made on the same day mate.
Bluedub
@ Stratty - isn't he the same pillock that stated "arsenal's main aim of the season is to finish above Tottenham?" Fair dues if that's their aim, and given the start they had it wouldn't surprise me if it was - but hell, every arsenal fan in the world must have been stupendously embarrassed by that admission!
fifthcolumnblue
'Arry's just a cheeky spiv. If he had money, he'd have no problem spending it....two for you, one for me. One for you, two for me... Just sounds like your average case of sour grapes to me. It's the sort of tripe being posted on here for a few years now. That 'Arry should join the bitter brigade doesn't surprise me. It's all he knows...
rojo2010
Verb 1. predate - be earlier in time; go back further. predate - come before; "Most English adjectives precede the noun they modify" predate - establish something as being earlier relative to something else. "Dim" I rest my case.
4everaspur
yeah, whatevera
fifthcolumnblue
Ok Evra, you got me with the help of the online dictionary, it still doesn't excuse you insulting me when there is absolutely no need.
Bluedub
Calling you dim is not insulting if it is true, which I think I have proved. Calling me Evra is insulting. Therefore you are insulting and dim. As for fifth cloumnblue you just appear to be a wum and I don't want to play with you today. Bye.
4everaspur
You go up to someone and call them dim Evra, see what kind of response you get.
Bluedub
All you've proved whatevra is that you are a bit of a coKK. With a capital C. Now that IS an insult, after all, who wants to be compared to a male hen eh?
fifthcolumnblue
Calling someone an Evra is racist. No, wait...
rojo2010
Shorely it's Evra calling someone a racist rojo? LOL!
fifthcolumnblue
I've read back through the comments Evra and I'm trying to establish why you felt the need to call me dim. I was merely questioning what 'arry said about Spurs not spending fortunes. What exactly did I say that you felt the need to insult me?
Bluedub
'arry would outspend Mancini and Hughes combined if he had the backing, no one likes spending money more, he's nearly bankrupted every previous club he's been at.
StuMCFC
fifthcolumnblue - Come off it mate, as if you were trying to catch someone out with a comment like that, admit your mistake and move on, it will make you feel better. Thank you for your entertainment Citeh fans, some interesting views and a good amount of banter. To be fair its not often you can get into a football debate without it turning personal. Lets hope for a thrilling second half of the season. In the words of Mother Teresa "Let us more and more insist on raising funds of love, of kindness, of understanding, of peace." TaTa
hawkerdinho
Don't speaqk with that hook in your mouth hawkerdinho. Shall I let you out of the keep-net now?
fifthcolumnblue
fifthcolumnblue - You wished mate, not my fault you cant read, the error is consigned to the history books for all to see and no amount wriggling out of it is going to make you look any less foolish
hawkerdinho
Indulging in a little regional stereotyping aren't we with the 'typical cockney manner' stuff. Jaysus, I thought that sort of cliched crap was left for the mouth-breathing Gallaghers and their ilk to spout, to your collective embarrassment.
lordjohnny
Heeeeere's Johnny and surprise surprise, he's still on his moral crusade.
Bluedub
i think what harry is trying to say boys is that in the last 5 transfer windows spurs have signed SCOTT PARKER £5M. ADEBAYOR LOAN. BRAD FRIEDEL FREE. STEVEN PIENAAR £2M. BONGANI KHUMALO £1M . WILLIAM GALLAS FREE. VAN DER VAART £8M . SANDRO £6M . KABOUL £4M . NIKO KRANKJAR £2M BASSONG £7M . CROUCH £9M NOW SOLD FOR £12M . KYLE WALKER + NAUGHTON £5M FOR BOTH. if you account that crouch out of that lot has been sold for £3m profit. we have spent £39m. how much was Aguero???????? Spurs record signing is Still Darren Bent at £16.5m and our Wage cap is £65,000 i dont see why you are all so angry with Harry's coments. Can someone please explain?????
spurs-stelios
hawkerdinho, I really am lost for words - you think whatevera you want pal, you clearly aren't familiar with me or my sense of humour. But I'm laughing all the harder while you squirm.
fifthcolumnblue
OI STELIOS - NO NEED TO SHOUT PAL, I HEARD YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
fifthcolumnblue
"I really am lost for words" reading helps broaden your vocabulary.
hawkerdinho
And humility helps widen your circle of friends hawk. Though I am impressed by your obduracy over this matter (Waits for hawk to google obduracy....)
fifthcolumnblue
Stelios, who's angry? You're the one shouting mate, the rest of us are giving our opinion on what he said, well until I was insulted I was.
Bluedub
Sorry didnt realise CAPS would read as if I am shouting. will someone now explain what your issue is with harry's comments then please as you are not angry???
spurs-stelios
Standard internet protocol suggests Capslock = shouting stelios, surprised you didn't realise that, but if no harm was intended, then fair dues. The article is a mildly sarcastic response to little self-aggrandising rant about how virtuos Spurs are compared to other clubs, particularly us. We're not angry with him, he is, after all, the biggest self-publicist in the game. I just feel it's a bit hypocritical of him to suggest that Totnam haven't spent any money (which is essentially what he's doing) - you most certainly have - not as much as us, but you're not exactly Plymouth Argyle are you?
fifthcolumnblue
Yeah, Bluedub, with a great big eff off hatchet. It'll even go through lard.....oops, pardon.
lordjohnny
Spurs - not got a great deal of money, but do deal astutely in the transfer market......
niteworlok
Well i hope its a Spurs City top 2. (In that order) In defence of Harry i dont think hes said much wrong either!
HuddersfieldYiddo
Forget who spoke the words, we 'arry said was facts. It's probably mind games anyway. I think the point here is that our owner does not dip into his own pocket. Joe Lewis is the major shareholder but the club is run like a company and there has to be structure around the ins and outs of money. It is a little frustrating TBH to see Chelsea and now Man City come in with endless amounts of money. It isn't an even playing field. It's very simple. Chelsea and City are the only clubs spending beyond there means without needing to worry about paying money back. Leeds tried it but there money was borrowed and now look where they are. The financial fair play may help a little to even the playing field. Please don't take comments the wrong way. I am not having a dig at Manchester City or the fans. You support who you support and want to see success like any fan.
asherthesmasher
Expecting football managers to be articulate or lucid when discussing any topic is optimistic in the extreme. Most of them couldn't hold down a job in the real world, and would have to be shown which end of the broom did the sweeping. Why do we expect Carlton-Browne of the F.O., when they are nearer to Chubby Brown of the eff off?
lordjohnny
Unfortunately, 'arry is more of a Dizzy Gillespie, such is his skill at blowing his own horn.
fifthcolumnblue
fifithcolumnblue = chip on shoulder.
jolmember
Why are you named after the Fulham manager's genitalia?
fifthcolumnblue
What did 'arry do at Portsmouth? No one remember his lavish spending for a club with a tiny stadium? Then what happened to Portsmouth after? And what Harry did?
StuMCFC
Why he accepted untaxed payments in brown envelopes from his good buddy Milan Mandaric Stu - how could you forget that? HMRC certainly haven't, which is why darling 'arry is in the dock on fraud charges the day after City Vs Spurs at the Etihad. Wonder if the wheels will fall off their title challenge when 'arry goes down?
fifthcolumnblue
'Arry wont go down - the English FA will sneak him out of the country and put him up in a nice Villa somewhere and he will manage the England team via a satellite phone so the 'Authorities' in the UK cant find him :D
niteworlok
I hope he does go down and hopefully he is made go down by some of his prison mates when he does go down.
Bluedub
Ah yes the England team... As if Crapello wasn't bad enough.
fifthcolumnblue
Still, I'd welcome the chance for 'arry to take over the Ingerlund manager's role - would take everyone about 3 games to realise that 'arry is better at bigging himself up than he is at actually managing a football team...
fifthcolumnblue
To all the virtuous spuds, please answer a simple question.Would you all really be bothered about living within your means,if someone came in and put in a lot of money into the club and the surrounding area,or would you be so virtuous and tell him to go away and put his money elsewhere? As for the cockney spiv,at a club like City,he would not be in control of transfers,so he would not be in receipt of those brown paper bags, which he seems to adore so much.
giolib921
Steve Bruce aint got a job at moment - maybe he should take over from The Capo
niteworlok
Steve Bruce? Would rather have Steve Coogan!
fifthcolumnblue
I vote James Corden
