Clichy Running Into The Form Of His Life

Clichy Running Into The Form Of His Life

Roberto Mancini's cunning signing of Gael Clichy proved to be one of the revelations of last season and the quicksilver full back's star continues to rise...

The capture of the eloquent 26 year old from Arsenal last summer proved to be an absolute steal at £7 million as the Frenchman's storming overlapping runs and Premier League title chasing defensive savvy played a key role in City's stunning campaign.

It's clear that Clichy, not unlike many of his colleagues at City is approaching the peak of his powers with plenty more miles to go on the clock, benefitting from the fierce team spirit Mancio has instilled in his squad.

In France's friendly win over Serbia last night, he was outstanding and played his football on a different level to that of the deposed Patrice Evra who was woeful against Iceland a few days earlier.

French team manager Laurent Blanc remarked ahead of Clichy's fine performance:

'Gael Clichy has shown amazing form. He has played very well and, having won the Premier League with Manchester City, he is in a very positive frame of mind.'

The almost unanimous view in la Republique is that Clichy should start at left back for France at Euro 2012. England's right back in particular could be in for a torrid time.

One of the best bargain buys of last summer in the PL. He copped a lot of stick in his latter days at Arsenal but I would suggest the Arsenal fans were directing their ire at the wrong target. When you have good commanding centre backs it makes your full backs job so much easier.

Let the Arsenal fans think what they want about him - City fans are just grateful (and lucky) to have him.

He's a winner, you could see what the title meant to him as he hadn't won anything since 2004... Quality full back and one of the assists of the season for Aguero's goal vs Wolves. Shrewd buy Bobby.

Clichy had a big hand in France's opener against Serbia. Terrific overlapping run and thumping cross the keeper could only parry out into Ribery's path. From what I saw last night any England old stagers are going to have to find an extra gear from somewhere on 11th June. According to spies who watched them training at the Etihad Hodgson wanted to see more long balls over the top.

An inspired signing indeed, it has been years since we had a left-back I didn't feel nervous watching. Mancini spent big on Kolarov to try and fix the problem but Kolarov can't defend very well and only threatens going forward. Clichy is simply superb defensively and has improved a lot going forward too. Near enough a perfect full-back for me, his performance against Newcastle second-to-last game where he dealt with the speedy Ben Arfa to perfection was one of the most complete full-back performances I've seen in a long time. He also marked Nani out of the 6-1.
