European Football at Eastlands

The City of Manchester Stadium has been selected to host the UEFA Cup final in 2008 the UEFA Executive Committee announced this afternoon

UEFA confirmed the award on their website saying: 'The committee decided after assessing criteria such as stadium capacity, safety and security, access, transport, supporters' facilities and commercial potential.'

Eastlands has already staged international football with a UEFA Women's Championship game in 2005 (if you call that proper football ! ) and the stadium has also staged a rugby league international and concerts by the Red Hot Chili Peppers, U2, and Oasis.

It's highly unlikely that City will figure in the 2008 UEFA Cup as we would have already qualified for the Champions League ;-)
