Unusual Rules Kick In For Carabao Cup S/F Second Leg

Unusual Rules Kick In For Carabao Cup S/F Second Leg

For the first time in nearly 11 years Manchester City take on Bristol City at a sold out Ashton Gate tomorrow evening. BUT, when one looks at the Carabao Cup rule book for the Semi-Final second leg tie then my head went into a spin.

Let me explain:

The first leg at the Etihad finished 2-1 in MCFC's favour (Match Stats) but what would happen if, after 90 minutes the match finished all square?

Carabao Cup official rules:

'In the Semi-Final ties, if the aggregate score is level at the end of the second game an extra half-hour shall be played.'

How does the away goal rule work?

'If the aggregate scores are still level at the end of extra time the tie shall be decided by goals scored away from home counting twice.

'If the teams remain equal after this procedure the tie shall be determined by the taking of kicks from the penalty mark in accordance with procedures as approved by IFAB.'

Substitutes in extra time

'Subject to Rule 10.2, in all matches, each team is permitted up to seven substitutes of whom not more than three may take part in the match.

'10.2 Where any match goes to extra time (in accordance with the provisions of Rules 14.4, 14.5 and/or 14.6), then subject to the League having obtained the prior approval of the International Football Association Board (IFAB) to the application of this Rule, each Club participating in that match will be permitted to use an additional substitute (in extra time only).'

Clear as mud then eh?

I wonder if Pep Guardiola has his head around these unusual rules.

If required I'm sure the Sky Sports commentators will be able to explain far better than I.
