'If It's Football, It's Vital'

Is Crouch just a Smokescreen?

City owner, Thaksin Shinawatra, has come out and clearly identified Liverpool's Peter Crouch as one of Sven's January transfer targets.

BBC Sport quoted Thaksin as saying 'Sven does like Peter Crouch, very much. But he has yet to decide (if he will make an offer).'

Given City's level of secrecy surronding their summer transfer targets I must admit to being somewhat surprised at Thaksin's forthrightness.

Thaksin has already said that he will not be held to ransom by clubs over transfer fees, hence the relative secrecy of City's transfer activity, but surely by declaring an interest you are already bumping the price up.

I believe there is perhaps just a little degree of smoke and mirrors involved here. It certainly suited City to be linked with a wide array of players in the summer and allowed them to bring in the players they wanted unhindered by artificial fees and rival bidders.

By diverting attention away from their true targets, City are perhaps playing a clever game that will allow them to do their shopping in private.

I see no point in discussing anybody publicly. Best to go about our business quietly. I don't like Frank briefing the media either.
Craig Cain
I think Frank did a very good job of putting the media off the scent as there is no chance that they will sign Crouch. If you listen to the main theme of his interview it is that he will not pay through the nose for players, so you can expect Sven to come up with another gem or two, or three, or four, from Eastern Europe and Brazil.

Dont agree. Let SGE conduct the media. Like I say, no point in discussing ANYBODY publicly.

I want tell you something, From my experience the transitions news do not be in this clarity, But this considered a message to another player playing in same status, For urged him to pressure to his Club,So you expect to see any striker move to City except Peter Crouch .

in terms of media links you are on a similar level of hype to spurs, the fact that both clubs have spent big and have announced intentions to spend, make us fair game for lazy journalism, meaning we will be linked with loads of players between now and the end of jan and 90% will be nonsense
