'If It's Football, It's Vital'

Sven praises fans (AUDIO)

Not since United were last relegated have Manchester City beaten their rivals on their own turf.

It's been 34 painful years of following the club across the city to watch their side take on United at Old Trafford which ended today.

On the day both clubs were remembering the 50th anniversary of the Munich air disaster, Darius Vassell scored his 50th career Premier League goal to break the deadlock on 25 minutes, finishing after initial saves from both himself and Stephen Ireland.

Debutant Benjani netted the second, flicking Martin Petrov's cross with his shoulder beyond Edwin Van Der Sar's reach on the stroke of half-time.

A professional and organised City side looked a million miles away from the tepid performance against Arsenal last time out, with some dogged defending coupled with one or two brilliant Joe Hart saves helping the cause. Not even Michael Carrick's late consolation could take the gloss away for the fans, who celebrated a league double over their rivals for the first time since the 1969/70 season and manager Sven Goran Eriksson paid tribute to the club's ever vocal support.
