Johnny On The Spot:

Manuel Pellegrini and his downcast and now uncompetitive Manchester City squad's wretched season has an air of completeness following this chastening defeat out of town...What's worse is that it is a defeat to what is regardless of what a legion of drooling hacks and pundits will tell you, NOT a great Manchester united side. The Stretfords that dominated English football under Taggart at their height would have roundly humiliated a pisspoor City more thoroughly today such was the deposed champions timid and spineless response when the going got tough...That the Blues chose the swamp to ship 4 goals in the league for the first time since Tiny Tim Owen's notorious 97th minute winner in December 2009 underlines the degree to which City have fallen this season and will set serious alarm bells ringing in Abu Dhabi...The Blues' by now astonishing freefall under The Engineer is quickening at an alarming rate and one clear and present overwhelming fact encapsulates a dreadful fall from the top of the table: We can bemoan bad luck, refereeing decisions and how FFP has self evidently throttled City's progress all we want but every one of City's 4 wins from the last 15 games has come against sides who were not up for the fight and against a hard working united side with fire in their belly there was only going to be one outcome once a fortuitous equaliser went in...City, demonstrating the type of incisive football that has been our trademark but only seen in flashes in 2015, had the rags rattled and fearing the worst up to that point but vastly experienced heads went down across the park and the awful chasing shadows served up in a pathetic second half showing were reminiscent of the bad old days we'd thought were long gone...Where we are right now was never in the script and I'd suggest that the decision pre-FFP to rest upon our laurels in the summer of 2012 rather than kick on with serious squad strengthening has come back to haunt us with a vengeance...Where City go from here is anybody's guess, but few would bet against the risk of the club falling out of Champions League contention altogether if the side continue to go through the motions to the extent they did in Stretford. The tireless Sergio Aguero, now 100 goals up in Manchester might yet drag his white-flagging teammates over the finishing line but nothing must be allowed to paper over the cracks of an insipid collective implosion.

Manuel Pellegrini:

"It is very difficult to be in fourth place. We have difficult teams in the Premier League. We have just four points behind United, five points with Arsenal. "We must fight until the end of the season. For the club, for me, for the players it is very important to be in a position for the Champions League. We have six games more to try to do it. We had been in second place all season. We have six games to go."

Pablo Zabaleta:

"A derby is always a special game and the game that players and fans want to win. Unfortunately it was a disappointing afternoon for us. It is hard to understand how we can play so well for 20 minutes and then be a different team. We had no reaction in the second half, we were really poor. We can play much better. The reality is that we are not playing well, we are far from our best. With six games to go we have to push hard to get into the top four.

"When you are not playing well and not creating chances it is hard. Normally with this team we do much better but the third goal was game over. You have to give credit to United, they were the better team.

"The criticism doesn't affect the team, the media can say what they want. Football is like that. We will fight until the end. We still have confidence in the team, we can be good again."

I'm not making excuses, we were beaten by the better side, there's no forgiving the WHOLE team ( not just your scapegoats ) for letting their heads drop when the equaliser went in but **ck me the officiating was poor today. 2 offside goals that finished the game off as a contest, you might say the Fellaini one was tight and you'd be right but surely the lino can spot that big **cking bog brush being offside? The Mata one was just farcical.

Louis van Gaal:

"I was very pleased because the fans are pleased and we are playing for them. The fans have not always had a good time because we started very bad. But still they were supporting, and now the results are coming back. It's great to be a supporter of Man United right now. That is the most pleasant memory - you have seen the arousal of the fans. I cannot complain about the fighting spirit of my team because the first 15 minutes Manchester City dominated and scored. We equalised and regained confidence and then from there we played a fantastic match. Of course I think maybe we could have started this form earlier but the last 20 matches we've been good and better than most of the Premier League."

Feedback from mates who were in the swamp makes for miserable reading, but highlight an angle I personally haven't talked about and that's a percieved lack of fitness throughout the side, many of the players looking knackered against energetic teams.

Training in question?

Mention was made among the Sky cognoscenti prior to kick off about rumours of training being 'boring' and it would not surprise me - too many times we seem to be running out of steam

Feck me. That's a player leak. We saw that towards the end of Mancio's reign.

Many of our senior players are on longer contracts than the manager as well.

Crème De La Creme
2000500100100100252525
I can take getting beat, even by the rags, (god knows we have been there before) but what I cannot forgive is MY TEAM just giving up, when Sergio got the 2nd, we had at least 5-6 minutes to play, and no player went to get the race back to re start the game, we just strolled around and accepted that that goal was a consolation. ......

I have never been so dissapointed in my Team as I was at that moment, ok they get paid to do something that I would give my right testicle to do, but I dont they do, and I want them to sweat blood, give there all for the shirt they are wearing and that i love sometimes more than my partner,
But today we just give up and for that i am ashamed to be a city fan, after that 2nd half performance and even worse as they went down to 10 men too, that is worse than when we got battered in Middlesbrough 8-1 and this will take some getting over

Wholeheartedly agree, cm.

Fellaini, Young, Blind, Smalling and Jones. All shite in my book and made to look world class.

Would explain VK's outbursts of petulant like tackles in the last few games but not his general demeanour.
He should still play with a passion that his position merits.

In an interview with the BBC shown before the game (MotD2 Extra) VK made this comment:-

"In previous years I think we wanted it more but things change."

http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/football/32260550

I thought at the time WTF? This was not the sort of thing I wanted to hear our captain come out with before the game but reflecting on the game and what your comment Ozi highlighted, I am wondering now if this isn't a hint at a lack of hunger on the part of some of his team mates. Sometimes true feelings leak out unintentionally just as body language can give you away.

Thinking bad on that interview I now sense a deep frustration in him - with his form, his injury hit season, perhaps the desire he has not being matched elsewhere and perhaps at his inability as captain to motivate some of the squad.........and this frustration can sometimes lead people to make rash decisions. I think his tackle could easily have seen a red card on another day.

Things are not right in Camelot

Good find Skoorb. We seldom know what goes on behind the scenes but I cannot but feel that VK needs to be a bit more like that cnut Roy Keane when he was captain- laying down the law publically.

VK always seems such a nice guy to me. Id like to see him point the finger at Edin or Nasri and give them a spray mid pitch.

Gutted after yesterday. We've known for months that the team has lost it's spirit and togetherness for whatever reason. It doesn't look like this situation is going to change by the end of the season so we now have to worry about dropping out of top four.

my thought exactly Rising, with half the team knowing they are off this summer so why bother, so lets bring in some players that want to play.
