Oh, I'd start counting those chickens, BD. The investigation is being backed by The US Department of Justice and the current Attorney General. It stems from not only bribes being taken for the locations of World Cups, but also that the corruption took place on US soil and funneled through US banks. FIFA also secured TV deals with Fox for the 2022 and 2026 World Cups without any public bidding, which is highly irregular.

I don't think they'll get away with it.

Some patsy will take a fall and will be looked after financially by FIFA for being the sacrificial lamb and the whole charade will carry on like it was before.

I find it interesting that the FBI are going after those that took bribes but not ( so far ) those that gave them the bribes.

Question is what is worse, offering or taking.

In taking, you undertake to do something in a particular way that would be to the benefit of the briber, in these cases I find it worse when people who have worked hard and gone about the business in a fair manner only to be thwarted by corruption.

I thank PBM for telling us why the FBI are doing the investigation and as a Brit, I trust the FBI to do a proper job and hopefully those who are found gulity are not replaced by others of a similar bent.

the fact that Blatter is not one of those arrested does not mean that he should not resign as this appears to have been going on for years but, will he go?

I don't think Blatter is in the clear just yet. The first step is to bring in those that you know have taken the bribe, make them talk, then go after those who provided the bribe. These are people who are used to lavish lifestyles who won't want to spend years behind bars. This is only just the tip of the iceberg.

FIFA are fooked.

US Government big guns are gonna steamroller them. Football fans the world over will be unanimous I am sure in their condemnation. Twatter's position untenable.

Closer to home, I reckon UEFA knew this was coming and adverse publicity imminent through 10 court cases against FFP has led to them rapidly trying to get their own dirty house in order.

I hope FIFA get absolutely savaged.

They may have gone on for years if they hadn't selected Qatar, that was really the odd one out and one step too far for the greedy ones.

Phillys right. The tentacles are everywhere and this runs deep. Even Bill Clinton's charity involved. He was upset at the 2022 result and his charity has been banking millions from Qatar trouser slimers since.

Blatters strategy is to carry on, even when the ship is sinking, he would be on the phone to the steward asking if he could sit at the captains table at dinner

I hope they probe them deep and often. I can see their faces blanch as they hear the sound of the rubber gloves being pulled on.

The good thing as far as I am concerned about this being undertaken by the FBI is that it cannot be tainted by the old European elite whose malign and twisted influence would have skewed any such investigation had it been initiated in Europe. This independence should be critical.

There will be some sleepless nights ahead for those in the higher echelons of FIFA and that's not just because the shredders will be working overtime. Finally someone has seen the light and acted on what everyone knew in their heart of hearts. UEFA's change of tack on FFP cannot be a coincidence.

Just heard Blatter's statement.

In total denial as usual. Hardly a surprise.

Skoorb, the FBI, they will do a proper job and the DA or ADA usually like these cases as it enhances their political aspirations and don't want a cocked up case., however I hope you don't include the UK police, who although every force is not without it's bad apples, would also do a thorough investigation if they had the resources and manpower that the FBI command.

Ok there's a serious "allegations of corruption in FIFA, and today there was a chance to rid Blatter and try to clean up FIFA, but the only person to stand against Blatter backed down in the 2nd vote???? He could have won it Blatter didn't get the 105 votes he needed in the 1st count to see off his rival, but for reasons only known to this Prince he backed down in the 2nd vote????

Now to me the prize was there, for the taking, so imo, dodgy deals were done in some dark room and if so this Prince is not the man to lead World Football we or Europe thought he is, he must be similar to Blatter and in it for himself, no matter how many words he says, cos it was all smoke and mirrors, ???? So we're stuck with Blatter and England will never get a world cup in my lifetime, Football lost a massive chance today, and we might not get it back.

No indeed, I couldn't agree more Buzz. By 'Old European Elite' I was referring to the footballing authorities and not the police service. Given how poorly we all view UEFA and have often expressed how twisted their FFP rules are I would not have been confident in their integrity either.

However much I dislike them (UEFA) at least I find that I must at least give them some credit for calling out Blatter to his face. There are some dark politics going on that is for sure.

WTF ever happened to it being about 22 people on a pitch kicking a ball about?
