Everton vs Manchester City - 4pm BST Sun 23rd Aug - Barclays Premier League Match Day Thread

Having despatched Moaninho's Chelsea in an emphatic (I prefer this to 'fake') victory last weekend, City travel down the Esat Lancs road on Sunday to face Robert Martinez's Everton.

Always a tough fixture and one which always gives me the wobbles. With Ross Wonder Boy Barkley appearing to hit his straps early this season they will offer another stern test and a dangerous threat. They will be lacking the services of Leighton Baines, Hibbert and Piennar but remain well organised and cannot be taken lightly.

City have started the new campaign demonstrating a steely resilience and determination and they will need to dip into those reserves to compliment the sublime skills of midfield maestro David Silva and the imperious Sergio Aguero. Two goals in two games for captain Vincent Kompany will have sent confidence coursing through his veins and we can only hope that he can continue this 100% scoring record! An early goal always helps to settle things down and with Sergio looking razor sharp last weekend we must hope he can slot one past the Man With His Hair On Upside Down, Tim Howard.

The big question for Pellegrini is whether having splashed £32m on another central defender he disturbs the solid start made by the City back line - unchanged in two matches, amazing! - and introduces new signing Otamendi, fan favourite Zabaleta or Gael Clichy who seems to be off the injury list. Personally I wouldn't change a thing. Winning teams are built on many things but a stable defence is usually the bedrock. In the past his rotation policy at the back coupled with loss of form by Kompany denied City this solid foundation and it would seem to make sense to build in the momentum of two consecutive clean sheets and putting your main title rivals to the sword by sticking with the winning formula.

Fernando remains injured but Delph is shown with a return date of 23rd Aug........will he make the bench?

Finally it will be interesting to see whether the Everyon fans will follow the herd and give City new boy Raheem Sterling the same boo treatment witnessed against WBA & some from Chelsea or, given their dislike of all things Liverpool related, give him a hearty cheer. The ball, Toffemen, is in your court.

Back four line up is going to start looking pretty strong now.
Would you play Nic O from the start?Think it gives a bad message to the Mangler if Pellers does this.
Is it time for Zaba?
Tend to agree with Scoorb: same starting team from the Chelski game.

Boo boys? Not sure. Maybe Toffees happy that he left.

There was little evidence of booing Sterling at the Etihad, it will be different with the dumb clucks at old toilet and Anfield, and I doubt it at the Toffees, they have their own problems with Stones.

Barring injuries I would suspect MP will stick with the same team as caned Chelsea

Pity we didn't get him. he played for San Isidro at first (our local team over here) and he has family up the road at Abadas (4 miles up the coast). seen him a couple of times near our watering hole.
Good news that the rags never got him though.

Injury update - Physioroom.com now listing Zabaleta as out with a knee injury until mid-September.

One selection issue less to consider then. Bacary, get your boots on.

From the OS:

Pablo Zabaleta has been ruled out for up to a month after damaging his knee in training. The City defender, yet to start a game this season, will hope to be in contention for the Blues' opening Champions League game in mid-September but could miss up to six games.

It's the first real injury Zabaleta has suffered in his career - though he has had numerous head and facial wounds over the past seven years - and it leaves Bacary Sagna as the Blues' only recognised first-team right-back.

"It happened in training," confirmed the Argentina defender. "It's the first time in 12 years of senior football that I've ever been injured like this so it's a blow, especially at the start of the season."

Journo's tweeting from Manuel's pre-match press conference

"It's impossible to move Mangala and Kompany from their positions at the momemt."

So no Otamendi this Sunday then.

Sounds as though Otamendi's work permit hasn't come through yet, so he'll be watching this one from the stands
