Silva's availability

On the eve of this game I happened to stumble across the fact that we are rapidly approaching another bl**dy international break just as David Silva recovers from the injury he sustained playing for Spain in the last one :doh!:

With Spain due to play England on Friday 13th it would be just our luck to see home return to full fitness in time to get called up to play in this friendly.......

......and there I have to stop myself for fear of jinxing things.

We all know that many of Fergie's players would suddenly pick up mystery 'knocks' which would prevent them from turning out for their national sides. Happened so often it was ridiculous (just ask Family Man Giggsy).

What is the rule these days? I have a feeling that if a player is declared unfit for his national side then he cannot play for his domestic club in their next fixture?

I doubt if Silva will play, unless he gets to play on Sunday against Villa

My concern is that he plays Sunday, becomes available for the international friendlies and then gets clattered and is unavailable for domestic games again :doh!!!:

I know I shouldn't borrow trouble - but I also wouldn't put it beyond some of his PL opponents in the England team seeing him as fair game and looking to put one on him in the hope he will be absent for City again

I've read that he's 50/50 for Sunday but I'm with you Skoorb, even if fit he shouldn't be included in the squad on Sunday, then request the Spanish FA don't call him up either on the back of that.

I am having no luck tracing anything about players being suspended for their next domestic club fixture if they're reported by that club as unavailable for an international game.

I can understand the intention - to dissuade clubs from pulling a Fergie and continually withdrawing players from international matches to protect them for domestic competitions - but have been unable to trace any info on this.

If correct it doesn't seem right that a club suffers as a result of injury sustained on international duty and just as the player returns to fitness coinciding with the next round of international fixtures they could possibly still be penalised even if the player is deemed unfit by them. Does the player have to be assessed by the country's medical staff? What happens if their is a difference in opinion?

We may just have to take it but it grinds my gears. It may well be that he remains unfit - Pellegrini has been stringing this out for a week or so now so it may be in his thoughts too.

Presumably this means that Shrek could clatter Carzola and put him out for the season, or Mata even, or vice versa - which would work in our favour. Also Sterling could put Merlin out for the season with a mistimed challenge.

Let's hope everyone comes through unscathed.

Yep, if they're called up to duty then the national team's medics assess them, ultimately it is their decision as to whether he's fit or not.

The rules regarding player's being released for international duty are summarised here Skoorb. The bit that you're referring to is covered in point 4.

Thanks BD. I think it is Section 3 that covers what I was thinking of - how injuries are assessed so I guess it may come down to whether Silva or the club requests he is not called up due to his injury status. The fifteen day window (call up period) may come into to play.

You are quite right kct - my point was kind of tongue in cheek - I could see us finding Silva is back fit just in time to play again for Soain but not his club!

Absolutely - that is the most frustrating part of it.

There's a piece I've seen in the Evening News where it's thought we won't play Silva at Villa to avoid him being called up by Spain.

It depends on his injury, if he gets a run out at Villa and then I would hope that in the International because it is a friendly that they would only play him for 20 mins, that would be good for DS and us for him to get some minutes under his belt, if he plays the 90 mins then its foolish because if they acerbate his injury it may come back to bite them in the maraccas

Exactly buzz, although my main concern is that it could come back to bite US in the maracas

Happily, I don't have that problem.

I think Spain knows what is best for them. They will need to rely on Silva more now that their midfielders are starting to age. I expect him to feature prominently for them next summer.
