You can just hear Ronald Koeman's pre-match briefing to his team.......

"This is the perfect time to play them. A heavy defeat at home after a poor performance, a trip to Italy and a tough game losing by a tight margin denting their hopes of topping their Champion's League group, several key players injured or not fully match fit, confidence dented, goals not flowing, and their defence......all over the shop. You have to believe. THIS IS YOUR TIME. Press them high, close them down fast, put them under pressure.........they don't like it up 'em"

Ok maybe forget the last bit which is a bit of a stretch into the realms of Dad's Army which I doubt he has even heard of let alone watched......but the overall sentiments are likely to be there or there abouts.

City return to the Etihad having strived to get a result in Turin which might - might - have seen them with an easier task in the round of 16 but ultimately having failed despite having their chances. Back at the Etihad where they barely showed up against Liverpool and still hampered by injuries which seem to be taking their toll on the mental confidence of the squad. The latest to succumb being Joe Hart which will give most City fans a cold feeling knowing that the defence, already creaking and wobbling, shorn of the consistency that comes with stability of selection will be playing front of Pellegrini's old friend from days past.......Willy Caballero.

Does my confidence no good whatsoever and I'm not playing in front of him. He always seems to have one mistake in him every game. Maybe that could be the bonus question for Beat The Clock?

Southampton come with decent form & currently lying in 8th place in the league a mere 6 points behind City and having won three out their last four fixtures. Foeman is no fool & I am sure he will have watched the Liverpool game with interest (as compared to our abject horror). I am sure he will follow the lead set by Klopp & I would expect high pressing, closing down opponents fast - after all it is not a million miles from his general standard of play. At the start of the Juventus game City were moving the ball with a zip and purpose that was very pleasing & above all the ball was being played forward earlier & more often rather than the sideways-sideways mode we have witnessed so often. Without the skills of Silva to find that eye of the needle pass through the packed defences this at least gets us through the midfield defensive shields we have struggled against so frequently. The side-side passing allows the opposition too much time and is far too predictable.

On the injury front Silva may be available but I will believe it when Pellegrini says so. He has been close to a return after injury more often than I've had hot dinners that I've given up believing the constantly sliding return dates. Bony may also be back but the defence remains thin without Kompany, Zabaleta and Mangala so the only choice will be between Clichy or Kolarov. Aguero will start but unlikely to finish as he continues his progressive rehabilitation into first team football. Iheanacho will be available after missing the Turin trip due to CL ineligibility.

The work of Pellegrini seems to be getting tougher. The squad's injury list this season has IMO hampered him significantly, reducing his tactical flexibility, denying players genuine rest and, I suggest, starting to nibble away at their confidence. BUT this is where they have to turn up, stand up and be counted. This is why they are paid the big bucks - can't complain about having to play every game and on a different day about disliking squad rotation......

The Liverpool result has been gnawing away at me and it needs to be washed from the system as early as possible.

Southampton will feel City are vulnerable & can be got at. They HAVE to be proved wrong. So once again there is NO time for the "slowly-slowly-we'll-get-a-goal-eventually-let's-just-pass-it-sideways-one-more-time" template but then I'm getting a wee bit tired of saying that they need to start the game more quickly and play with more tempo......and the back five (yes I am now including Willy) need far better protection than they got against Liverpool.

Oh for an early Aguero goal. Or two. :please:

Come On City!!

Must have missed the Mangala injury. Thought he wasn't mentally right. Is it long term? Apparently VK is out for 2-3 more weeks with this calf injury. May be time to bring in that young Everton lad to have him learn his trade with OTA and ship VK out when he still have value. VK is a big unit and he will be playing for Belgium next summer so I cant see this injury going away with no long turn rest.

Would go with the same team as Juve to give Clichy and Kun more game time. We should batter this lot. And hope the rags lose. Need confidence with the Arse game looming..............

The Saints are a good team with a good coach. We need to be sharp and decisive on the counter, hope Merlin can get some minutes.

I expect Pellers to give an update on Hart's injury in the presser today, the only down side for us they do the presser in two parts, so those entering comps don't get the full story until mid morning on Saturday.

Don't give 5th ideas at a bonus you cannot easily find the answer to. lol

Another great preview Skoorb, thank you.

Anyone know what the squad is for tomorrows game?

along with Kompany and Mangala, which will mean that Ota and Demi will continue in the middle.

Another great Skoorb scene setter...I have mentally blocked Willy's howlers at Spurs out of my mind. Clean slate. Solid win required. Come On!

This Blue will be in another call of duty situation but getting the score when I can!

Come on City!!!

and yet, weirdly, I'm quietly confident for this one. Mind you, the team hasn't been announced yet

I have to admit that I am very uneasy about this one.

Willy in goal, DeMichelis in defence and no height up front suggest we could be in for a tough game.
