The blast happened at 22:35 BST on Monday and 19 people have been killed at the Manchester Arena just after the end of a Ariana Grande concert, who has a vast following, mainly teenagers.

At the time typing this 60 people have been injured and are being treated in hospitals in the area.

There is no news as to who or what has caused this attack.

Strangely Unconfirmed reports from two unnamed US officials suggested the attack was carried out by a suicide bomber.

Obviously the Greater Manchester Police are investigating the incident and they will release further information when it becomes convenient.

Greater Manchester Police has established an emergency telephone number in response to the attack. It is: 0161 856 9400.

The Etihad has opened its gates for anyone stranded in the area and Police have asked that people who need help should make their way there

Other local hotels and people have been helping at the site of the incident.

VMC sends condolences to those families that have suffered losses in this cowardly attack and to anyone injured in the attack we wish them a speedy recovery

just caught this on the news.
19 dead and 50 injured.
What a sad, sad thing to happen to what will probably be mostly young kids.
What a sick and evil bunch of non humans they are to do this.
One day the idiot politicians that have allowed all the immigration of people, the ones with no plans to ever integrate, will be held accountable.
Politicians from many different countries that have bent to the will of people hell bent on causing trouble wherever they can.
Weak,, weak politicians. You should all hang you heads in shame for you are almost as guilty as the perpetrators of these heinous acts.

I have merged these two threads.

Tragic news - the death toll has now risen to 22 with 59 reported injured. I would not be surprised to see these numbers change yet again as the day progresses.

Desperate time for the families of those involved and especially for the parents of children whose whereabouts remain unclear. Thoughts and prayers are with everyone involved.

MCFC have stepped up and made the Etihad stadium available - GMP have advised anyone needing help or assistance to attend the stadium and go to Gate 11.

I saw very early comments on Twitter late last night, and hoped nothing would come of it.
I woke at 10 this morning to find this - 22 dead.
Words fail.

At the height of the confusion no distress last night (3.14 am) the utter tool known as Eamonn Holmes posted this after the Chief Constable of GMP made a statement to the media:

"19 people, probably kids killed four and a half hours ago and Chief PC Plod of Greater Manchester Police adds no narrative to what happened."

I was so incensed at his crass and insensitive comments that I decided to email him.......

Dear Mr Holmes,

On your Twitter account at 03.14hrs this morning - and it may not have been you - posted this comment:-

"19 people, probably kids killed four and a half hours ago and Chief PC Plod of Greater Manchester Police adds no narrative to what happened."

The author of this Tweet clearly has no empathy or understanding whatsoever of what is involved when dealing with a mass casualty event. Nor does the author have any appreciation of the priorities that the police service and their senior managers have during the early, critical hours after such an incident. These do not include being required to provide a ‘narrative’ for the media who may be feeling ‘out of the loop’ as they, along with everyone else, struggles to deal with the magnitude of the situation. There may be a gap in your knowledge - not necessarily satisfied by apparent transatlantic news sources who may very well be speculating without foundation - but surely you can grasp that serving the media with information which might compromise an active investigation or hinder the ability of the emergency services to be adequately managed in their immediate response to the aftermath is not at the top of that list.

In any major incident the responsibility of the police is to co-ordinate the response to the event and this includes liaison with other emergency services, local authorities, national counter-terrorism teams, the intelligences services, senior government officials, ministers as well as the Home Secretary and the Prime Minister. The key priority remains the safety of those involved in the incident and that of the first responders, securing the scene, initiating the investigation and working to determine whether there remains any further threat to public safety. This is on top of ensuring that the work of the Casualty Bureau is progressed so that the families of the victims of the atrocity can be identified and steps taken to ensure that informing them of their bereavement is handled speedily and with the greatest sensitivity. This work has to be done with speed but not in haste - this is an area where certainty of action is critical and the need to be unquestionably correct of the utmost importance.

It is not to ensure that journalistic curiosity be satisfied. If you were personally affected by this tragedy it can be understood that the apparent vacuum of information can be distressingly frustrating and deeply worrying. The processes which have been put in place are the result of a great deal of thought, planning and experience and following them - by contacting the emergency number for example - is the best advice that can be followed.

However if this was not the case and you were not personally affected with a loved one at the event then the tone and style of your tweet was both crass and deeply offensive to all the police officers whose first duty is to run towards the incident whilst others are moving away.

The responsibility for managing all of what must be done is enormous but during the early stages (& some 4.5 hours after the incident is very much an early stage) of such a serious incident the media role is not the primary focus for the responding and investigating authorities - it is, and always will be, the safety of the public. That the media has a role to play during such incidents is not disputed but at the point at which the Chief Constable delivered his briefing it was neither appropriate nor probably possible to provide any detailed information. Satisfying the needs of journalists and the mass media to feed their updates is not the priority at that point - the inevitable vacuum is simply a matter of fact and one which has to be responsibly managed by news editors and their teams. What is required from the media is a degree of understanding, knowledge and empathy and not the drive for a ‘scoop’.

The reference to 'Chief PC Plod’ was both crass, rude and demeaning and demonstrates a woeful lack of empathy. If this was not you I would be grateful if you could ensure these comments would be passed on to him or her.

In any event, I would rather trust the judgement of the senior police officer leading his force in their exemplary response to this most distressing incident that I would the author of this comment who clearly lacks any understanding of what he is talking about.

Thank you.

I saw that tweet, and some of his responses to comments, this morning. In replying to a mate who posted a reply, I used the same as above - 'Words fail'.

It's subsequently been deleted, and I understand he's now said sorry, but also followed up with a mealy mouthed 'justification' for it.

As to your e-mail, Skoorb

Any arrests now and hopefully they catch them all though I doubt it.
My sympathies to all relatives and the general Muslim population who also must be living in trying times.
