Big Sam has left the Palace.
One wonders is it over for him now as he is talking about spending more time with his family but this has been said by many over the years only for them to pop up somewhere in another management role.
I don't blame them as football is an addiction as we all know.
However I have always had a sneaky admiration for Sam and whatever your feelings for him, he will always be remembered, at least by me, as being a great character of a great sport.
For what it is Sam, best wishes to you and yours.

He did a magnificent job when at Bolton - was a master at pulling off coups in terms of getting the max out of supposedly 'over the hill' pros and was a pioneer in respect of the use of stats to inform how to manage games, I believe he introduced the Pro-zone system at Bolton. He certainly added character to football - I still remember his rebuff to Maureen's moaning after he got a result against Maureen's Chelsea in 2014

Accused of playing "19th century" football and "parking the bus" Sam's response was brilliant....jovially slapping the table and laughing he said.....

"He can't take it can he? He can't take it, he just can't take it because we've out-tactic'd him, we've outwitted him, know what I mean, he just can't cope can he?"

And after a journo repeats a comment from Maureen (inaudible" Sam says...

"I know he did. He can tell me all he wants, I don't give a shit"

Cue much laughter from the assembled press corps.

He has rescued a few sides but it is intense and draining I am sure. Can't blame him for wanting to down tools, he has had health problems previously. I wasn't sure he was ever going to move the England team forward and he made himself look silly in how he lost that role but I wasn't too disappointed. Not sure we'll ever win any major trophy again in my lifetime but I certainly didn't think he would have been the guy to bring them close. So long Sam & thanks for the memories.

Until you come back again....
