Interesting take on the summer transfer activity and what it might mean for Pep's tactical approach to his second season in the Premier League.

"How Manchester City's pursuit of Kylian Mbappe signals a tactical shift in the approach of Pep Guardiola"

It gives me the warm fuzzy's knowing that the man understands that he can't play the way he wants and is willing to adapt. I feared that he was going to be too stubborn to change.

It was an enlightening take on how things evolved last season. There is no doubting his intelligence and how much he sees and is prepared to adapt. He said he came here to learn.

There's so much I disagree with in that article that I don't know where to start.

First up, there's no lopsided priorities. We're on the verge of bringing Mendy in, and if not for Alves reneging on Pep we probably wouldn't have spent money on a back-up right-back ( Danilo) and instead used that money to invest in a back-up left back, reports suggested the intention was Bertrand.

Then there's Bernardo, he's not a nippy winger, not in the traditional sense anyway, he's as much a winger as Silva or Nasri are albeit he's a bit more pace than both. The writer also suggest we're overstocked in nippy wingers, who? Sterling and____? Sane is our other winger, who I wouldn't describe as nippy and even if the description does fit then that's two wingers and there's two wings, hardly overstocked. Bernardo will compete for a place in them alternating 8 positions as well as the wide positions, excellent signing when you consider his versatility.

I'm not sure what point he's trying to make regarding Mbappe and Aguero.

The writer talks about using proper wingers sticking to the touchline in the second half of the season. What exactly does he think Sterling and Nolito were doing in them first ten games of last season?

There's been no significant break from past methods, he's used these methods both at Barca and Bayern previously.

He did adapt last season but he always has done throughout his career and I expect no different this season, what I do expect is a greater tilt at trophies because he will have more options through the versatility of his signings to adapt his tactics game to game depending on the opposition. His ability to adapt in-game will also increase significantly.

We aren't getting Mbappe so I don't understand what he's on about.

If we got M'Bappe (or Sanchez) I'd fear for Aguero's position. I know Pep etc have said he's staying but managers (or players for that matter) saying and doing are not necessarily the same.

Re tactics I imagine it will still be a case of 'you score seven and we'll score eight' - nine if we're at home.

I take your point about what players and mangers say Mr. 'tache, however Khaldoon himself stated Aguero was going nowhere in that club edited interview.

I wonder how many players will be left that have not been pep's choice, it looks like he will have no excuses this season

I think it was a wake up call for Pep, he has to change tactics because ever team in the league can beat each other on their day, whereas PG has only been in league where only a handful of clubs was likely to win their respective leagues.

Pep also discovered that you cannot get by without having strength in depth and that the Premier is a unique league.

He says himself that there are more transfers to come and letting go both left backs it does need to be rocket science that he needs a couple there I know people think there is a problem in the middle but I think Otamendi is underrated, Kompany if he can stay fit will solve half of it and with stones and Tosin.

However no matter what we do the media will complain, especially the Mirror who seem to be waging a witch hunt regarding City's acquisitions whilst as Skoobs points out in another thread ignoring the vast amounts being spent in Stretford.

Centre Defender back up options for city without stones and kompany could be tricky next season !!!

walker and tosin could pair up as CB with Danilo and mendy takes full back position or we will shift to back three without tosin and with two defensive mid options..(fernandinho and yaya)

Otamendy stay is a huge questions with real calling him to fill the void left by pepe and our coach doesn't rate him much.. also mangala looks like leaving the club anytime soon. so I'm thinking we should take a futuristic look without these two players..for CB options without stones and kompany. Any ideas guys
