Mini-Preview

Time is my enemy this week so only the briefest of previews I am afraid.

After successfully negotiating their fourth round tie against Wolves in midweek City are heading off for another tough fixture against opponents from the Midlands in the form of Tony Pulis’s WBA.

Having been victorious against the Baggies in each of their last six fixtures one might be forgiven for thinking that chalking up another victory will be a formality. City fans know better though and despite chalking up a significant milestone in the club’s history with their 12th consecutive victory last Tuesday, Blues fans will be wary of this encounter. Sides managed by Pulis always seem to find an extra gear as well as making sure they have their kicking boots as Ilkay Gundogan can attest to after he was synched down by Jacob last time out. Mike Jones was in charge of that game and he joins the party again on Saturday - possibly by request of the home side who somehow managed 1 booking to City’s 4. Go figure.

The effect of City’s draining League Cup win might be a factor especially as Sergio Aguero remained on the pitch for the full 120 minutes. He may start from the bench as a result as he continues to chase the elusive club all time goal scoring record. I hope that he can get that Eric Brook sized monkey off his back soon as it seems every single team is becoming determined to avoid being recorded as the one he succeeds against. Also, the longer it goes on the greater the mental pressure becomes to try harder, shoot instead of pass etc which risks unbalancing the play that has been such a joy to watch. Patience is required - which is easy to say when I’m sat at home or in the stand - but he just needs to trust in all the skill and ability that has got him to this position. Make the run - Kevin will find you.

Finally I have to find time to congratulate Claudio Bravo for his performance against Wolves. Three outstanding one-on-one saves during the 120 minute match were followed by two saves during the subsequent penalty shoot out. Although he will undoubtedly return to the bench for this fixture those saves and the way in which the players rushed to him after Aguero had linked home the winning spot kick spoke volumes for the squad and will have done wonders for the guy’s self-esteem. He kept City in the cup and deserves the plaudits.

There is no respite in the world of top level professional football and definitely no time for sitting back and thinking the job is done. Next week Pep and his men fly out to Naples to see if they can seal their progress into the knockout stages of the Champions League; then comes Arsenal at the Etihad.

Time to really make a statement - extend that unbeaten run and watch history get made when Sergio Aguero nets for the 178th time!

Come on City!!!

Opponent to watch

Claudio Jacob - if only to see how far he gets in the game before he commits a snide foul.

Good write up mate.
Bravo and his family will benefit from his performance after their recent troubles.
Best wishes to them.

Just back from the mountains in NE Victoria, so thanks for the preview. I think we should win this, but snide play will try to keep us out I fear.

Skoorb, Mine wont even come anywhere near as good as yours. (this is brief? lol)

Pep has something to prove now, having made a ball an issue in the League Cup, having won at the Baggies with this controversial ball, we should in theory do better with the premier ball, I hope so.

The only difference I have with Skoorb's line up is Gundogan on the bench in place of Zinchenko.

I think so too. Wouldn't it be fantastic to get his goal at the home of anti-football.

I too would go with Gundogan if he is available

In other news I see Duchess used his press conference to go in about diving again. Undoubtedly responding to a question from a hack but I doubt they challenged his decking eyesight given that nearly everyone agrees it was a penalty. Needs to get back in his box and get over himself.

Mike Jones, has only refereed 3 Premier League matches this season, but funnily enough he did referee the League Cup game at the Hawthorns when City won 2-1, issuing 5 yellows, 4 of which were City players and as I recall, The Baggies were lucky to only have one yellow as their ruffians duffed up our players at will with what appeared to be with the Refs consent.

Is that why he has only reffed 3 matches in the top echelon of the English football?

I am expecting more of the same from Jones as Pulis details his knuckle draggers to rush out the elbows and late tackles

The Baggies are a dirty, dirty, dirty side - the only professional thing about a Pulis side is their attitude to the 'foul'.

If sides like this aren't prepared to take us on and fight fire with fire then (and especially at home) they oughtn't be allowed to 'park the bus'. It's not our fault if they don't have players as gifted as us. They should instead just let us get on with doing what we have to do in order to score 3.6 goals.

During the S** A*** F******* reign didn't certain sides/managers just roll over and not put in much of an effort? I want to see sides giving us that sort of freedom of the park.

I'm not going to guess the line up but I predict the berti will have cost £150m - give or take the odd mill.

I am with you on that Kenny, sides did roll over for Taggarts' rags, but the difference is now, we are perceived as the Team that ruined football or should I say interloped into the SKY 4 where for years it was known at the start of the season who would finish in the top four, now with City and Spurs upsetting the cart, they continue to find way to try and stop us.

I don't remember any team hacking down Stretford or parking the bus, but the difference between this season and last as far as we are concerned, we have a skeleton key (if the ball is a good one) that can unlock most buses, our main problem is the Referee, will he be strong enough to deal with these ragamuffin ruffians from West Brom?
