Simon Stone

BBC Sport at the Etihad Stadium

A consolation goal for Watford but it won't stop Manchester City recording their 20th win of the season.

Remarkably, they have now scored at least three in 11 of their 22 league games.

Pep Guardiola on BBC Match of the Day :

"We played really well. After dropping two points, we spoke about our reaction because big teams drop points but not too much.

"We made five changes from the last game but it's not our fault. I know here in England the show must go on, but that’s not normal guys. The big bosses should reflect that.

"We’re going to kill the players. The federations don’t think about the players but they have to. They play 11 months in a row. They have to protect them and play with quality and not quality. We have to think about the artists. But I know it won’t happen.

"Watford scored because they have good players. We will review the action but people can not expect us to win 7-0 every time."

"Kevin has an inflammation and we said maybe you stay back and don't play but he said he wanted to play," said Guardiola.

"He had a bit of pain but he wanted to play. It showed me a lot. He wants to win the Premier League. We want to follow him in this behaviour."

"Jesus will be out for between four to six weeks, or a little bit longer, but hopefully back as soon as possible."

He is right. The distribution of games across the Christmas and New Year period is ludicrous and has been generated solely to satisfy the demands of the broadcasters who want wall-to-wall PL games throughout the two weeks. This has created a scheduling nightmare with some clubs playing twice in 48 hours (us, WBA, Spurs for example). It is all very well for “deep squads” toget thrown into the argument but it is impossible to make that argument and then complain if they standard of fare on offer suffers.

Great to see KDB playing but I don’t expect we will see Jesus on the pitch until March.

I expect Wholesale changes for Saturday

But hasn't it always been this way over the Xmas period?

I guess that in exchange for the billions of pounds the broadcasters pay they will want to maximise their product, if the clubs want less matches then they would have to be prepared to accept less money. Football clubs/football club owners like money...

How to free up space to incorporate a winter break when the season seems to start earlier and end later every year; Revert the CL back to the European Cup knock out formula? Get rid of international breaks? Drop the League Cup? Reduce the number of teams in the PL?

And at least there aren't the Home Internationals taking place after the season has finished. Imagine...

Guess that like most things it all comes down to money...

And yep, wholesale changes for Saturday.
