'If It's Football, It's Vital'

Manchester City FC vs. Tottenham Hotspur

City of Manchester Stadium

16th March 2008

4pm

On Sky

MCFC v Tottenham HFC

A more important game for City as Tottenham play out their season for pride and extra merit payments where as City have a very slim chance at making the one and only league UEFA cup place.

Vital Quotes:

Sven talks about Tottenham: "I think they played very well against PSV and they deserved to win that game," he observes. "They changed their formation two or three times during it so to work out exactly what organisation they will come with is hard.

"They started that game without Lennon and he`s been on fire lately - so I don`t know if he has some problems or tactically Ramos wanted to play the diamond.

"It doesn`t really matter what they do because we will try to play our way.

"It`s always more important how we act on the pitch then how the opponents are going to be organised. If we do things well it doesn`t really matter."

Manchester City FC Team News:

Sven is sweating on the fitness of centre-back Richard Dunne, who was carried off in the defeat at Reading with a badly gashed shin.

The Republic of Ireland international initially tried to play on after sustaining the injury in a tackle with Stephen Hunt, but was forced out of the action and required nine stitches.

With Micah Richards out following a knee operation, Eriksson can ill-afford to lose the services of Dunne.

Full-back Michael Ball twisted his knee at the Madejski Stadium and is unlikely to feature, but Nedum Onuoha could come back into contention after a hamstring injury.

Winger Martin Petrov serves the final game of his three-match suspension following his dismissal in the defeat by Everton.

Valeri Bojinov is still building up from his knee injury.

Player to watch: Elano Blumer

With Tottenham being a decent footballing side; Elano has a chance to show more of his skills.

Tottenham Hotspur Team News:

Tottenham have Alan Hutton available after he was ineligible for the midweek Uefa Cup exit to PSV.

Defenders Younes Kaboul (knee) and Ricardo Rocha (groin) are doubtful while Gilberto returns to the squad.

Player to watch: Dimitar Berbatov

His display against us in the league cup quarter final was the best forward play I have ever seen.

Match Facts & Stats

In years gone by Tottenham would not look forward to playing City as they had the far superior record against them; but since the inception of the premier league Tottenham have a great record against City and you have to go back nearly five years since City secured all three points against the north Londoners.

Tottenham if they win could make their fourth double in a row against City.

Ref Watch:

Mark Clattenburg - a reasonable referee; this is his third City game this season, the other two both at City where both resulted in a one nil victory; United and West Ham cup replay. This is Tottenham's fourth game with him in charge and all three previous games they have failed to win.

Match Prediction:

With so many defenders out I think City will be a bit nervous but Tottenham might be suffering a European cup hangover after extra time and penalty defeat at PSV on thursday and so I predict a cagey score draw. 1-1.

Next Fixtures:

Bolton Away on Saturday 22nd March with a 3pm kick off.

I think the most we can hope for is no Cards brandished against us in our big push for a Fair Play place in the Uefa Cup.
alphieblues
C.O.Y.S. HE WHO DARES WINS YOU KNOW IT MAKES SENSE WE WANT A PLAYER ARCH AS WE ARE THE CARLING CUP WINNERS .
POP
You guys ready for your usual 2-1 loss?
CoxintheBox
What an amazing season for Spurs. A hell of a turnaround. Well, we're more than overdue a win against you, and as everyone in football knows, Man City, whoever the gaffer or our players are never more dangerous than when they have been written off!
Johnny Baguette
Would you believe it Lawro has got us down for a win.
alphieblues
That's knacked it, then! What line up are you running with alphie? Let's realistically go without Dunney for this one. That was a bad one at Reading and we can't risk him ending up being out for longer. No Ball, Richards, Dunne, Hamman, Bojinov, Petrov. So... 4-4-2: GK Hart RB Sun, CB Onouha, Corluka, LB Garrido RM Elano CM Gelson, Johnson LM Caicedo F Sturridge/Castillo, Benjani Now THAT is a young side outside of Benji!!
Johnny Baguette
I should add that there could/should be a place for forgotten man Geovanni??
Johnny Baguette
Well JB a tricky one to call, with the present injury problems I would like to see a 3-4-3 with Hart - Logan, Corluka, Onouha, -Garrido, Fernandes, Johnson, Elano, - Caicedo, Benjani, Sturridge, I know Logan is out on loan but I would bring him back quick as he would give us the options we are looking for.
alphieblues
i see a 2-2 draw here both teams are playing well but might chokem in front of each other
ozanne park rangers
Interesting team selection, alphie. I understand Logan has been sent back to Eastlands injured!
Johnny Baguette
I think this is going to be one of those anything can happen and probably will games ozanne!
Johnny Baguette
So an unusual 2-1 win then CoxintheBox? Terrific character shown by City's understrength young side. And two MCFC Academy lads scored our goals. Back of the net.
Johnny Baguette
Congratulations guys, The nice thing is if you win with a good performance, And I think the turning point was in the exit Lenon & enter Vassel .
city 81
Ok,congrats, gonna keep my big mouth shut pre match in future, looks like our guys are on holiday already, zokora in particular was shocking, and you got your payback for Chimbonda's dodgy goal at the lane with Irelands equally dubious one this time round.Good luck with your european push, think Svens doing a great job and he could teach a lot of managers(some not too far from your place)about humility and graciousness.
CoxintheBox
Fair play to you there, C in the B! We were only saying the other week what a great ambassador Svennis is for our club. Still think Europe can be done. Target Everton and see where it takes us. Everton, Villa, Blackburn all due bad runs. Here's to our own being over. Has to be a confidence booster beating a Spurs side who have been stunning in their resurgence. The word in Mcr is that Taggart and Queeroz are targeting Berbatov. Can you hold on to him? Some player.
Johnny Baguette
I really hope so,would be sickened if he went to manure,he has the best touch i've ever seen, technically the best player spurs have had for a long time, lets all hope it dosn't happen eh?
CoxintheBox
A good win. Benji did well again, full of heart as he did for us. we play the spuds next Saturday, cocky London gits.
storagematt
What a great result especially from the young lads. Maybe fifth spot is not out of the question as I see the Toffeemen have to play Liverpool, Chelsea, Arsenal and Villa in their remaining games.
alphieblues
I thought they did us a favour taking off Keane, he always does well against us. Liked Onuoha today and played well left centre back. Garrido played better than I have seen him do recently although he does worry me when he goes too far up field, he needs to talk to willie Donachie, who rarely got past the half way line. Castillos best game and would have tucked a couple away if he had been match fit. reminded me of Johnny Crossan (for you older guys). Dunne like a rock. Passing poor again, but cannot fault the effort and team spirit to come back and win it, but this is not the first time they have done it this season. Elano out of position, I just think that he is easier to control if on the wing, and more dangerous inside. Definately top 10 well over the blue moon. Looking forward to next season already.
Buzz Lightyear
alphie, But Chelsea and Arsenal maybe will be easy matchs for Everton!! becouse if they ( I mean Chelsea and Arsenal ) lost a chance to win in the premier league , They will focus on winning in the European Cup.
city 81
Quick question to everyone on the forum, thought Castillo had a great game, ran at defenders, smart runs off the ball, but, and perhaps I'm off base on this one, he looks friggen tiny! Do you think he, like some of our other players against rougher teams day in and day out might not be up for the rigours of a full PL season. Your thoughts?
BlueCanadian
Agree entirely, BC. El Diablo is a cracking little player and lightweight players have often lit up the top flight. Juninho and Zola spring to mind. They just need protection. I still say we need more steel in midfield and the answer could lie within the club. Richards to central midfield with Johnno and sign Daniel Van Buyten from Bayern. Easy!
Johnny Baguette
If we get to keep him BC he will be an asset, played out of position and was short of match practise, but agree with JB and his comments, except Richards in midfield.
Buzz Lightyear
How about a Gattuso or a Viera for late career battling, then Buzz? Or bringing Roma's Simone Perrotta back home to Ashton?! Definitely need a midfield general.
Johnny Baguette
Agree with you JB always thought Micah would suit us better in midfield as he did with the Youth team. Castillo on the right Petrov on the left, a fit Bojinov and Caicedo as strikers Europe here we come.
alphieblues
JB any of those choices would be great all good MFGs. Richards wont play midfield he wont get in the England Side. I do think he should play right back.
Buzz Lightyear
Buzz...Surely Micah's role for City should have no bearing on his role for England.
alphieblues
Mclaren was asked by SGE if it was alright to play Micah at CB even though he played right back for England. I think Capello who has only seen Micah at CB should see him at RB. The point I am trying to make Alphie is, that Micah wants to play for England, he will get into the team if selected for FB or CB, but he wont get in the team at FB & CB if he plays in midfield for City.
Buzz Lightyear
I still say that if Micah's cause for our Club is in midfield then B***ocks to the England team.
alphieblues
Alphie I agree with you he would add that bit extra to the middle of the park but micah wouldn't want to play there if his England place was at risk and he would want a move..
