Manchester City FC vs. EB/Streymur

Oakwell Stadium, Barnsley

31st July 2008

MCFC v EB/Streymur

City go into the second leg of their UEFA qualifying tie against Faroe Island's EB/Streymur with a two goal advantage.

Vital Quotes:

Mark Hughes talks about the game: "It`s good, and we are looking forward to the game. The first leg was a little bit of a trip into the unknown, to say the least, but the players got the job done professionally.

"We`re two weeks further down the line in fitness terms, that was a concern going into the first leg but it won`t be a concern this time around. We`ve done some good work in the last month and we are looking to step things up now.

"We`ve got the cushion of the two away goals, it`s still a situation we need to be mindful of but I would be very surprised if we did not progress."

He then talks about complacency: "There is always that concern, but I don`t think it will be an issue. We are now very much into our preparation for the Premier League season, which is upon us very soon. The guys that are involved are playing for places and looking to wear the shirt on the first day. I sense they are very much wanting to show what they can do, and trying to impress.

Manchester City FC Team News:

Bojinov is not quite fit for this game; there is no news on whether Rolando Bianchi will be available, but he has not been included in the squad that has been issued to the associated press.

Michael Johnson is available after receiving a knock.

Player to watch: Stephen Ireland

He was City's best player in the drab display in Hamburg and so I expect that desire to impress Hughes to continue.

EB/Streymur Team News:

With little knowledge of the team all I can say is that it is likely to be the same that started two weeks ago which was: Torgard ,Bo ,Clementsen ,Djurhuus ,Foldgast (Davidsen ,85 ) ,Bardur Olsen ,Jacobsen (Brian Olsen ,76 ) ,Hans Pauli Samuelsen (Eliasen ,77 ) ,Hanssen ,Arnbjorn Hansen ,Niclasen

Subs not used: Magnus Poulsen,Balog,Kruse,Thomassen,

Player to watch: The Goalkeeper

He was their best player in the away leg.

Match Facts & Stats

Probably one of the very few times that a UEFA cup game has had to be moved from an 48,000 seater stadium because of a concert!!!

Ref Watch:

Romanian Augustus Viorel Constantin - not the most experienced referee; lets hope he does as well as our female did for the first leg.

Match Prediction:

With fitnesses improved I expect a much higher scoreline than the away leg. MCFC 5 - 0 EB/Streymur

Next Fixtures:

Stockport County away friendly at Edgeley Park on Sat(2nd) with a 1pm kick off.

The FA charged Joey Barton's first interview: " The first days the toughest, no doubt about it. They march you in, hand you your uniform and force you to pose for the photographer while loads of fat, tattooed, skinheads shout abuse at you. Thatís when you know itís for real. A whole life blown away in the blink of an eye. Nothing left but all the time in the world to think about it. Thatís when it hits home. Thatís when you realise you have signed for Newcastle United....."

No doubt KK will have many soothing words for him. I just wonder if the FA will throw the book at him.

OK Alphie with you, want a hat full, we are have had two weeks traini g, had a good work out against hamburg. The EB/Streymur defense were woeful and had we been a bit sharper we may have been able to experiement tonight, so we need to put it to bed and then we can look forward to a good draw tomorrow.

Team News City: Hart, Corluka, Dunne (c), Richards, Ball, Johnson, Fernandes, Petrov, Elano, Vassell, Sturridge. subs: Schmeichel, Onuoha, Hamann, Ireland, Evans, Bianchi. So its a chance for sturridge to show what he can do, but again its the supply into the box that is essential. glad to see bianchi on the bench.

Vassell has missed a couple of close chances and Corluka missed on a header - so says the report I heard on Setana Sports.

Subs for Petrov , Fernandes and Sturridge were Etuhu, Hamann and Evans. City came out on top with a 2-0 victory 4-0 on aggregate. an early goal by petrov from a chip acoss the box into the feet of petrov who made no mistake and Vassell made it 2 into injury time with a glancing header by Evans into the path of Vassell who took it round the goalkeeper and slide it into the open net. The oppostion was no Hamburg but had we been sharper it could have been far worse for Eb/Streymur had it not been for the good keeping by Tordgard who had to make numerous saves. The traffic was one way so much so that Hart did not have a shot to save. Petrov and Corluka hit the bar and post and some poor free kicks and crossing into the box left a lot for Bluesy Hughsey to work on. Sturridge took the eye and Petrov taken off with slight injury. Fernandes for a yellow card and Strurridge to give Evans the chance in the last 20 minutes. Vassell played well, if only they could cross. Bag of chances loads of misses, but their best game by far.

35 shots at goal, 10 blocked shots and 11 corners. Christ, it should have been double figures!!

I'd be quite worried about the inability to score against the opposition you had, doesn't bode well when you are up against good teams does it !!!!

The good teams are not going to have a 10 man defence, EB/S were here for damage limitation, they were lucky that they got us this early. I will give them credit for defending, but this was another competetive game under our belts and we are getting better each time, still missing that right wing diamond and left back. Ball is the best we have at the moment but we could do better. Also need another midfield general. In the Didi Hamann role you need intelligence and the ability to pass left or right. I hope Fernandes takes note that if he just slowed down a tad and thought about where he was passing the ball we may get somewhere, but until then Hamann gets my vote. The question is if we get that right wing to go with Petrov on the left and a younger Hamann, who do you pick Johnson Elano or Fernandes in a 442?

Would like to see Etuhu given a decent un on the right wing you never know he could save us a packet in our search for a right sided player.

Alphie, he would need to improve a great deal if we go down that road. I would like to see him go out on loan. There is a suggestion that he is not a natural winger. You could have fooled me. Just needs honing on what to do with the ball, Last night seemed to want to get to the byline and then struggled to cross and when he did cross it, it was over hit. He is young and will learn from experience, but we are not a teaching club and thats why he should get some regular first class games which will benefit him and ultimately us. I remember Joe Corrigan was absolutely bobbins when he first went in goal, but then he went to Harry Gregg on loan and came back a better player for that.
