Micah Richards joined City from Oldham Athletic as a 14 year-old and has since progressed through the Club's successful Academy before making his first-team debut as a substitute in the 1-0 away defeat against Arsenal in October 2005. He announced his arrival properly by scoring in stoppage time in a 5th round cup tie at Villa Park although it is perhaps remembered more for his excitedly sweary indiscretion in front of the TV cameras during a post-match interview. Well, he was only 17 years old.

He took the City No.2 shirt during the close season and made his England Under-21 debut against Moldova in August 2006 followed by his full England debut in a 1-1 draw with Holland in Amsterdam. He continued to impress for City and gained three more England caps, but in the 2006/07 season he began to develop an acquaintance with the physio's at the club which would lead Roberto Mancini to later describe him as 'crystalli' when a shin complaint that he had struggled with for some time needed surgery.

After some excellent form in the 2007/8 season he won the Man of the Match award for his performance in the derby win against the rags in August. But just after having signed a new five and a half year contract his injury blight once again struck when he was ruled out for around six weeks after requiring surgery on a knee cartilage problem.

During the 2008/09 season he seemed to have cemented his place at right back but since then a combination of injuries and the increasing top form of Pablo Zabaleta has meant that he will have to demonstrate a serious upturn in performance and effort in order to regain that status. After an improvement under Mancini he suffered a serious injury which kept him out of contention for much of the 2012/13 season.

Capable of powerful runs forward he has shown he can deliver but can be guilty of switching off at times. He has an infuriating tendency to jog back into position after having broken forward. As one of the sole remaining graduates from the Academy still in the senior squad at the club all fans will want him to address these issues and succeed but it remains down to Micah to apply himself under the new management set up and show them that he should be picked ahead of other members of the team. This could be a make or break season for him at City.
